i recently pulled the 305 out of my silverado and installed a fresh 1977( atleast i was told it was a 77).060 over 350 four bolt main, that came with a points distributor. after dropping the new motor in and hooking it all up i went to stab the Hei distibutor that was on my 1984 305 and it had alot of wobble in it i mean you could move it in circles hotizintially so i pulled it out and put the points distributor in and it was tight like it's supposed to be. i then pulled it out and proceeded to mic the centering lobes (or what ever there called) on both distributors and they matched perfectly . the only visible diffrence in the shaft is that on the Hei there are only 2 lobes near the bottom and on the points theres 3 , 2 at the bottom and 1 about 2 inchs or so from the top. can anybody tell me why my Hei wont fit snugly and the points will.

A 1977 350 should not have come with points! GM stopped useing points in about 1973. Your 84 distrib may not work. Try going to a junk yard and getting a hei dist from an older car. Good Luck

You might have a marine block 350 there. They used points ignitions into the 1980's, and all were strong 4 bolt main blocks.
IMO get an electronic ignition conversion kit for the points distributor. There are several brands available for as little as $100, and are very easy to install.

Are you sure the dist. was completely in the hole? If it isn't engaged into the oil pump it will sit up just a bit, hard to see back there. Far as I know all of the dists. are the same as far as fitting in a small block.
