lightening flywheel

i have a almost stock civic and work is being done on my car and it would be easy to remove the flywheel to be made lighter. how much should i take off? suggestions?

remove it an lighten it. i dont know how much to have taken off. i've heard anywhere from 3-8 lbs. how does this affect drivability? i know it wont increase power but lightening is supposed to remove weight from the engine and make it respond faster.

Yes, it will make it rev quicker because of the decreased rotating weight...

I would go with whatever you can do and depends on what you want. Something like an 8lb (total weight -- not like shaved 8lbs over stock) will rev to like 6000 rpm basically feathering the gas - so streetability will be hard unless you are a maniac :)

I mean, if YOU are the one taking the flywheel off, take it off -- get 3lbs removed, install it and see how well you like it.

And don't forget it to have it rebalanced. And you SHOULDN'T takle too much off for two big reasons.

1. Gas mileage and uphill climbing ability will drop significantly.
2. You run the possibility of having it shatter at high RPMs.

don't take too much off either because honda motors rely on the flywheel to balance the engine.


that's why we don't have harmonic balancers.

Uh yeah, hondas do have harmonic dampeners. If not the vibrations would destroy the bearings.
