I'm thinking about it....but I don't think that they will let me be one because I don't have a car. :disappoin I'll probably apply for the Radio Controlled car section....

I'm not. I thought about it, but then I realized that even if they picked me, I'm already busy as all hell and that more time on AF is exactly what I don't need... lol

anyways, would someone mind PMing me and telling me what the deal is with all the banned mods? I've been gone for the last week so I'm really quite clueless.

^Done, um...applying for mods. I want to be one, been here long enough.. What would really suck though, if this applying for a position is another joke! :banghead: :grinno:

EDIT: WOuldn;t be surprised if this gets closed though. Seems any thread made about being a mod has been.

its all a joke. If you looked back through all the post, whenever a person who was banned came back with a different name to post, the thread was locked within 10 minutes. Some before 5 mins. I mean its like they knew when and where they were going to post. Now they have applications to be a moderator? Come on! 300-400 word essay as to why you should be a mod, no more than 1,000?! I havent been here that long, but im pretty sure there is alot better of a way to pick mods.

Its all a joke

You think its a joke?

Iv spent 5 years moderating forums learning how to deal with people who cause trouble, I have access to search features and I.P trace tools you can only dream about, and you think its unusual that it takes 5-10mins to clean up an unwanted post?
Do you have any idea how many trolls get banned from AF everyday?
How much spam gets removed?
No you don't, and do you know why?
Its because moderators are smarter than you will ever be, and there are enough of us online at anyone time that we always know whats going on.
We can get on top of situations and problems and remove them before most members know anything has happened.

But AF is growing, and now we need more.
There are over a thrid of a million registered members here, over 10,000 of which are still considered very active, with at least 5 times that number lurking.
AF ranks very highly on google and Yahoo searchs, and we are one of the most heavily read forums on the internet.
On average 2 users get banned everyday, usualy for spam.
And 5-10 spam posts get removed.
All of that has to happen with as little impact as possible on the forums, and we get most of it with in 5 minutes of it being posted by the spammer or troll.

Then of course there is helping other members with technical knowledge, being a strong technical knowledge base is important, you have to know when bad information is being given, and correct it, and you have to be able to help members find information you don't know yourself.

And of course you have to always be a voice of reason, sorting out disputes between members, settling debates and ensuring all members show each other respect.
This can mean sorting out miscomunications, passing out warnings, giving advice on how to change behaviour, or if needed tempory bans.

In the past if we needed more Mods we approached members we thought would be suitable.
But AF has grown so much that we no longer know who all the members are, so we are trying something different.
The questions have been phrased in such away that we hope to sort out the 15 year old kids who drive mommys car to the shops from the experianced enthusiasts who have been fixing, modifieing and owning cars for a number of years.
We only want mature, stable minded people who can demonstrate a love of all things automotive.

Now if you still think its a joke then don't bother applying because we won't be interested.

*Shakes head*...if you wanted to say this is a joke, then come up with a better reason. Although, i'm intrique about Moppie's software he has.

Like, ironically they do close threads before a lot of people notice but then take like a day on others. :p j/p

bullSHIT. For the good of all of us do not get started with that holier-than-thou attitude. The last thing we need is arrogant moderators. Just because you're a mod doesn't mean you're better than the non-mods; you were once a non-mod until you were granted the responsibility of modership.

We can get on top of situations and problems and remove them before most members know anything has happened.
this is true. I salute you.

I thought about applying for modship, but I am not sure I could be objective enough to be one. I would probably request to be a moderator of the Taurus Forum, due to the fact that I drive a Taurus....

I salute the people that are going to apply for modship, and hope they dont make the same mistakes that several others appeared to have made...

but I still have this itchy feeling in the back of my mind that this is another attempt to get one over on the entire AF site, like they managed to do last year.

But.... in 5 days, I will see if I will be proven wrong, or not.

Actualy most of what we use is built into VB, its much simpler (and safer) than having to install 3rd party software.

Wouldn't be too terribly hard to figure out. High school math anyone? Oh, and besides that, you just told us :p

Thats a lot of counting posts and members!
Given the number of posts per minute, and regisitrations per day I think you would need a little more than some high school maths.
Having an unhealthy obsession for AF would be a start.

bullSHIT. For the good of all of us do not get started with that holier-than-thou attitude.

Not being holier than thou, just pointing out that a lot of people really do have no idea.

Actually it bothers me that the wrong mods got the ax. There are a few mods here who have no business with a computer, let alone the responsibility of moderating. This is one forum where, generally, the mods operate by their own rules. The ones who got banned are the LEAST guilty of this. Moppie, you are generally (at least as far as I have seen) not one of the culprits, but there are SEVERAL who love to lord it over the common folk. They DON'T lead by example. They lead by the rod. "One more comment like that and you'll have 2 weeks off to think about it!" There are a few who have no concept of civil disagreement. You CAN'T have an opinion other than theirs. The only reason I would ever consider being a mod here would be so that I would have a voice that they would be less likely to squash.

As I see it...If you can't abide by the same rules as everybody else...unplug your computer and get a real life. You have no business moderating.

Ok I just applied, but after reading this, my hopes appeared to have been dashed
.
The questions have been phrased in such away that we hope to sort out the 15 year old kids who drive mommys car to the shops from the experianced enthusiasts who have been fixing, modifieing and owning cars for a number of years.

I'm a 16 year old who drives my Mum's car, so does that mean I'm pretty much not gonna get a look in? Sounds like a tad of discrimination going on here. Just my :2cents:

Discrimination isn't a dirty word.
Ok, but I just don't think it's fair that people applying for this job are being judged by what they drive, or whether they've been fixing up cars their whole life, when there are others out there who would like to take on the responsibilty specifically as a mod, but don't have the mentioned attributes.

It's actually about 10 times that. Been a while since you got your hands dirty, eh Mr Admin? :p

03-28-2005, 05:34 AM
^ sorry mate, but i agreee with OZ on that one. (aimed at rapstagangsta)

this is an Automotive forum, sure a lot of people can quote stats, but not a lot can actually know how to fix a car, that takes experience.

and as for "discrimination" it's a part of life, without it our society would truly suck,
think..... without discrimination:
1- no separate toilets for men and women
2- no separate sports like women's tennis or male boxing
3- 13 year olds moderating a great forum, and giving advice on "how to tune a car" simply from what they heard on TV
but yes, there is a line where discrimination can go too far.

BTW: i'm not applying for modship, simply because i know there are more suited people to the job than me, i like to help the newbs, and whoever else needs it, but as far as the automotive side of things, most are beyond me.

and what's wrong with being a 16 year old driving mummy's car, i'm almost 18 and drive mum's car still.

I don't think I'm gonna apply. It would be cool to be a mod, but definately not a big deal. I still feel it's not the same if mods are picked via an application process. Although, it's a damn good idea. Just seems like more work for you moderators than discussing whom should be promoted.

Good luck to who ever becomes new mods.

Damien
03-28-2005, 11:08 AM
I applied, but I'm an 18 yr old without a car at all. Although, I did do all the mods to my car (mainly fixing it then actually mods but it's still automotive) and I helped my neighbor's, friends, etc.

Kansei has a point, we don't need youngins on here...youngins...and Im only 18, goin' on a power trip and acting like they're 20 or something handing out BS.

As for this bein' a prank and tied in with the other issue, I wouldn't think so quite as much (if the other bein' truly real) 'cause AF really is lacking in mods. The application part though seems weird, but yeah, better chance for meh! :D

Vote for me! :p

i still think somthing's up. applying for moderators? AF's old policy was anyone who asks to be a mod is put on the "never gonna be a mod" list, now you're taking apps? wouldn't it be better for existing members to nominate who should be a mod instead of a bunch of people tooting their own horns about how well they can mediate or how mechanically inclined they are?

all i know is we need a mod in the maxima forum, or a Nissan mod willing to stop in and tidy up every once in a while. Our moderator, MaximaDriver (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=369), hasn't been active since 2003, yet there are still stickies with all sorts of no longer relevant information as well as links to his no longer functional web page. not to mention there seems to be an endless number of old threads being continually resuscitated on top of the same questions being asked and answeres ad nauseum and of course the flame wars that occasionally tend to break out.

lol you must be so smart, you can moderate a forum! Your holy godness please understand im not worthy to be in your presence!

Also just to show how much more of a joke i think this is, none of the members still dont know why the mods were banned. You said you would inform us when you got to the bottom of and the investigation was done. Well since its obvious your trying to fill emtpy mod slots now, what happened with the old mods? So now you have two ways to answer this question, you can say the mods have been banned/removed permanently at which point you will have to explain the situation to us, or you can say nothing at which point will only further my argument that its a joke.

And i really doubt that you guys just now decided to have an open mod tryout session. Convienent timing huh?

How things change. I'm remember a time when, once a week, someone would post a thread asking how to become a moderator. The thread would be locked, the user would be banned and we would pass the time until next week.

Keeping a thread on topic is a very basic skill.
Especialy for those who claim to moderate other forums.

If you want to bash AF then all the mods and admin have PM and email enabled.

If you still think its a joke then you can try and decide the fate of people you thought we were mates, people who untill recently you respected.

And you can help sort through the 50+ PMs Iv recieved from members most of which I have never heard of, asking to be a mod.

And if you really think you can do better then why not send me a PM instead of talking B.S. and spaming this forum.

Add your comment to this topic!
