are fieros hard to work on?

I was thinking of selling my 87 towncar for a fiero but everyone says they are really hard to work on and replacement parts are very exspensive-is this true and are they pretty reliable cars?

in my experience, fieros are...different to work on. being midship, there is little space to do engine work. also you dont lift the engine out of the car, you lift the car off of the engine/tranny cradle. very expensive? not overly, not as much as say a corvette or classic car. reliable? yes and no. if you abuse it, it wont last long. but if you keep it maintained, it should be quite reliable.

yeah parts for the fiero are pretty cheap because they use alot of the same parts as other cars in the line.

I know it's a lot harder to change out the alternator in an automatic fiero than it is a manual one! But really they are pretty straight forward cars...a lot of the parts were used on most other GM vehicles of the same era, so almost all parts are readily available at your local parts store. If you do the work to it yourself, you'll learn the car like the back of your hand and you'll find they really aren't very hard to work on.

yes its pretty tough to change the alternator on an auto. i had to sit on my trunk and give mine a little kick to get it back in. it kept hanging on the studs that hold the alternator cooling tube on.

I know that you can drop in a 3800 V6 in it but can i still leave the manual trans that it already came with..???? or do i have to switch to an automatic that the 3800 would come with...????

When swapping the 3800 engine you'll need the ECM from the donor car. That ECM is set up for an automatic transmission, so you will need to get the ECM reprogrammed for a manual transmission. Since the 3800 had an automatic, you'll need to get a clutch for the engine etc. :2cents:

Fiero's are no harder to work on than the average FWD car. I would rather work on V6 fiero than my old Bonneville SSEI.

If you don't have the space or knowledege on how to drop an engine and raise a car don't get one or have someone teach you, that's what I did. Now my brother in law and I can drop an engine in about 4 hours if we bullshit and take 90 breaks......you know you always have that friend that is wanting to talk to you while you're doing car work. Now if you're like me and you drive like a fukking idiot then yes you will have a high maintenace bill. If you drive hard get a spec stage 3 clutch and break it in properly. I bought a ram hd from the fiero store and it was OK at best and that's stretching it. The zoom clutches are pretty fukking good. My brother in law abuses his clutch and it still performs like new. Sorry for all the extra.....got any questions bout the fieros reliability as far as beating ohn it just ask.....I've probably broke whatever you want to know bout.
