Welcome to the forum.

Your service engine light may be on for a variety of reasons. The "environmental" one would be emissions related, which it isn't neccesarily. It could be on for many reasons. Your best bet is to take it to a place like Autozone, and they can hook up a scanner to your car and read your codes for free. They'll be able to tell you what the problem is, and then you can go from there. Good luck, and shoot back if you have any questions about your problem.

Yea, already went to Autozone. That crappy scanner said it wasw realated to emmsions, but it gave no code. Alll I know is that is emmisons related. I refuse to be charged $500 for my local car garage to read my car's computer.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

You will not be able to shut it off until the root cause is repaired even If you do get it reset it WILL come back on Again, only after the signal contition is fixed will it reset. And what ever is causing the light to come on could aleo cause other problems for the engine down the road and may cost well over $500.00 then. My advice is to find a cheaper garage, one the may charge you a small diagnostic fee. Those types of garages are out there you just have to look a little harder they are getting hard to find.
Good luck.

A common emissions code among Grand Ams deals with an evaporative leak through the gas cap. The stock gas caps are crap and are known to leak. I use to have the problem - bought a 7 dollar replacement cap @ Autozone, and the code cleared itself.

No problem - yeh for only 6 to 7 bucks I think it's worth it as a quick fix

try a new gas cap, my light keeps coming on but my mechanic told me to try it and they are cheap enough it's worth the try.
