EGR Trouble Code

Need help with this one. Bought a new OBD 2 (EZ Scan 5000)
Shows a trouble code of this---
Exhaust Gas Recirculation ERROR (EGR Number 2)
What the heck does EGR Number 2 mean?
I can reset the code and drive forever. Code only comes back on restart of car.
I should add that the car runs like new. If it weren't for the SES light I wouldn't know anything was wrong.

I can get it a bit closer,as far as whats wrong if you could give me the 3rd,8th and 10th digit in you vin #

Id take out the EGR and check for debris holding EGR open, it could be a stuck pintel valve, may beable to clean it with some brake clean.I also found a test from GM that may help.

If DTC P0403 is set, diagnose DTC P0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Solenoid Control Circuit first.
With the engine idling, observe Actual EGR Position display on the scan tool.
Is Actual EGR Position at the specified value?
0%
Go to Step 3

Turn ON the ignition switch.
Select the scan tool EGR valve output control function.
Increment the EGR valve through all positions while comparing Desired EGR Position to Actual EGR Position.
Does Desired EGR Position remain close to Actual EGR Position at all commanded positions?

Review and record scan tool Fail Records data.
Operate the vehicle within Fail Records conditions.
Using a scan tool, monitor Specific DTC info for DTC P1404 until the DTC P1404 test runs.
Does the scan tool indicate DTC P1404 failed this ignition?

Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector.
Observe Actual EGR Position on the scan tool.
Is Actual EGR Position at the specified value?
0%

Probe the EGR pintle position sensor ground circuit at the EGR valve harness connector with a test light to B+.
Is the test lamp ON?

Turn OFF the ignition switch.
Disconnect the PCM.
Turn ON the ignition switch.
Measure voltage between the EGR valve pintle position signal circuit and ground.
Is the measured voltage near the specified value?
0V
Go to Step 12

Check the EGR pintle position sensor ground circuit for an open between the PCM and the EGR valve.
If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

Replace the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Replacement .
Notice: If the EGR valve shows signs of excessive heat, inspect the exhaust system for blockage--possibly a plugged converter--using the procedure found on the Restricted Exhaust System Check. If the exhaust system is restricted, repair the cause. Inspect for an open injector caused by one or more of the following conditions:
• Stuck
• Grounded driver circuit
• Possible faulty control module
If one of the above conditions is found, inspect the oil for possible fuel contamination.
Is action complete?

Locate and repair short to voltage in the EGR pintle position signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

The EGR valve pintle position signal circuit for a short to the 5 volt reference circuit.
The EGR valve pintle position signal circuit for a short to the EGR valve control circuit.
If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

Check the circuits related to the EGR valve for poor terminal connections at the PCM.

Boy does this look complicated.
But-- I will try to follow it.
So far I haven't been able to get specific readings for the EGR Valve from my scanner.
I will keep trying to figure it out.

Clear the code and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery for about an hour. This will "reset" the computer. Reconnect and drive, if light comes on with same code, try cleaning EGR and also check wiring and do the above procedure again. If there is still a problem, replace it with new one and clear code and disconnect battery. My car had similar problem, but after replacing the EGR with new one, code still came back until i "reset" computer.
