My buddy just got a sohc zc in his crx and we were out the other night riding around town and we come across 2 4 door civics they kept hauling ass pass us but we werent going to mess around with them because of traffic then traffic clears up a bit and we smoke them pretty bad. when the race was over the the car starts sputtering when he gives it gas so we pull over and pop the hood smoke comes billowing out and we see that the cat is glowing red hot. I was wondering what could cause this. Im guessing alot of build up in the cat, but im not sure.

more than likely... if you don't have emissions put a test pipe in there, and if you do put on a high flow cat.

youre running too rich air/fuel ratio and that causes cat to overheat (glowing read hot). you better fix that problem right away or the substrate inside your cat will melt down clogging your exhaust system.

I thought running lean causes higher EGTs...

not sure what you mean by EGT's but yeah running rich A/F causes cooler combustion chamber temp. but then it also causes the cat to overheat glowing red (overworking the cat on converting emission gasses). his best bet is to run his engine with no cat.

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temp
EGT = Exhaust Gas Temp
