Help with alternator

I have a 96 GST 5spd, and this is my first time replacing the alternator. I got it off pretty well, but my problem is putting the new one on. I'm stuck where you have to mount the alternator to the bracket. My question is does the pivot bolt fit into the little slot on the bracket or can you have it in any position? I would like to know so I can finish putting it on. This is puzzling me because I put the long bolt in first to hold the alternator in at the bottom, then I put the belt back on, and then tried to mount the alternator on the bracket. But, it seems like the pivot bolt will not sit flush on the bracket. Someone please help me with this problem because I am a newb to this. Thanks, my name is Mike.

just loosen the pivot bolt enough where the alt will drop to put the belt on the tighten the screw up to bring the alt up.

You took the whole alt. off to change the belt? If that bolt is not flush, then you have the thing upsidedown. Hopefully this crappy pic might help.

No, I did not take the whole alternator off to change the belt. I took the whole alternator off to put in a new alternator and my problem was putting it back on. I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens. I was having trouble getting the correct position of the pivot screw.

If you are talking about the square headed bolt. It does sit flush. Here is another crappy pic. I am just trying to help.
