What could be causing this??

I have a friend who is giving me an 87 CRX (not sure whether it is a DX or HF, he said that it is the middle level one so which ever that is.
Anyways the guy he got it from had thrown a rod and driven on it thinking it was just running rough... My friend rebuilt the engine and when he went to fire it up it would run fine until the thermostat opens and it will stall out. He told me he thinks it is a warped head and that coolant is seeping into cyl #1. He is military and getting moved to VT so he didn't want to tow a non-running car up there and bought himself a 91 Si. Since he is giving it to me I can't complain (and trust me, I'm not :biggrin: ) but I am hoping that I can get this thing running pretty cheap without having to do a swap right now (maybe later down the road when I am a little more comfortable $$-wise)

Is it blowing steam out the exhaust?
The "middle level one" would be a DX.
