i have the same problem as you you will want to go and use jump wires straight from the 2 plugs on fan to the battery, if it runs your fan is still good if not replace it. if it worked i cant help you more if you dont give me what engine you have i have a 2.5l 4 cylinder in my 86 ciera. ended up somehow getting my cooling relay to smoke and short out so im having to replace it. we ended up having it wired permenently on for a bit and am now wanting to get it running correctly. i am having to replace the wiring connector to the cooling relay on the shock tower from a wire being piggybacked on another and it shorting out. luckily this happened in my driveway, not on the road.
get a hanzes or chilton manual for the car, it helps alot with these cars. (i have both)
ps ended up getting a used connector to my relay from a wrecker because the price of it is 35 bucks CND dealer net. and the relay is 8 bucks dealer net. there both coming in to my work tomorrow and hopefully my car will run in the next few days.

I just went through this today. First check the bottom lefthand fuse in the fuse panel in the glove box...it's the juice to the fan...if it's ok then go under the hood..
Stick a safety pin through the electric fan black wire w/red stripe and jumper a 12 volt wire to it from the battery..if it jerks or tries to run, it's good and you can go on to the next test. If not, the fan's bad.
At the front of the motor/drivers side and screwed into the side of the head is a squeeze the sides, round pin connector with a green w/white stripe wire. Turn the keyswitch on, connector a jumper wire from the pin inside the connector to a good ground on the motor. The fan should come on. If it don't, the fan relay, mounted on the inner fender panel/drivers side, is likely bad. The good news is most autoparts stores stock it...about $10.
If the fan comes on, the the device screwed into the block, Cooling Fan Switch, is likely bad and nes to be replaced...another $10.
It's un-nerving waiting for the fan to finally come on but it will in a few minutes.

ya we ended up changing the cooling fan relay someone butchered the wiring and the relay (the relay on the driver shock tower) fried and so did the connector and then nerrowed it down to the cooling switch (the part that screws into the front driver side of the block) and ordered one straight from GM (i work at a dealer so its fairly cheap) so its now running strong!
but i still have a problem with the power windows (they arnt in proper order from front to back, its pass-front, pass-rear, driv-rear,and finally driv-front) is that the proper order or is it just me?
