supercharger

I’m thinking about putting a supercharger in my car that I found on Ebay. A friend of mine told me what when you install a supercharger/turbocharger in an engine that’s not designed for it you need to reconfigure the compression ratio. Is this true or is my friend stupid?

There is so much to learn on this topic. In short, yes your friend is correct. Its a careful selection of compression ratio, boost pressure, whether or not its intercooled, your current timing curve and fuel curve... way too much to get into here.
I'm going to move this thread to the appropriate forum to get you some more responses

if the compression is too high for the octane gas (and many other factors) you could possibly has pre detonation (ping, knock), do you know what this is? Most people will lower the compression ratio by buying low compression pistons. High compression does spool faster, but most people dont raise comp when turboing.

pre-detonation is when the fuel air mixture combusts before the spark plug can egnite it correct? Higher octain gas would correct this? Wont an intercooler also correct this problem? Will lowering the compression ratio also steal some power out of my car? What other problems would super or turbocharging an engine cause?
In your opinion whats better? The supercharger or the turbocharger?
Thanks for all the help :)

what kind of car are you planning on supercharging/turbocharging?...tell me its not the breeze
seriously?

The Breeze is my tinker toy. Basicly Im using it to learn off of because if I screw something up I wont feel so bad as compared to destroying a car I would really want to keep like a Supra or a Skyline. Ive come to figure out that tinkering with a Breeze is like trying to eat with your feet. My options are small and hard to come by and all the mods Ive made on it have been custom and Ive had to use my finer problem solving skills to complete them. So its a trial and error deal, and a learn by experence car. Im starting from scratch and know hardly anything about much of the termanology as compared to this topic. I just read about 1/4 of the turbocharger 101 thread and I think I now need to take some Advil.
Again, thanks for the help.

Sounds good,
have you thought of doing this to a different cheap car? maybe one with rwd? I wouldn't want to drive a breeze with any more power than it already has without some other serious modifications like a rollcage or something :lol2:
Good luck

Thank you for your suggestion! :)
Please emphasize on your understanding of Breeze modifacations and the safety conserns it comes with.....
Also, what car would you suggest for a learner like me to modify and tinker with? A honda civic perhaps?

I run a 9.5:1 CR and ran it under 6psi non intercooled. it would be safe for like 6psi from a supercharger.
Main thing to worry about is adding fuel and getting timing correct. Some guys I know run 15psi on stock block 9,5:1 CR. Head design has a lot to do with it, but we run 180psi of compression. IDK what Peak Cylidner Pressure is.

I smell sarcasm. I don't think that you should mod a civic, its been done. However, you will soon find out that modifying a car that is not commonly modified is much more costly than one that is often modded(like a civic). I am assuming that you are not loaded of course. I would like to see more people putting money into old Z cars and old rwd corrolas etc.

Those were types of cars i was gonna say. Like rednecks old Z with the SR was awesome. Cars you could mod....240sx, AE86, old RX-7s, old mk III supras, cars like these could be cheaper, and fun to mod.

I say a civic is a great car to start on. Plenty of support and capable of being pretty quick. Plus there are many routes to go.
I haven't heard of too many parts for a Breeze.

I don't think he liked our suggestions.
Well here it is: If you want to go fast, the Breeze will not be an easy/cheap avenue of success.
If you do get that thing into the 14's, let me know.

Werd...
I remeber cruising at 60mph in 4th gear. I had just turboed. Crappy stock coil was goin out. Unintercooled at 5psi. I put one of those in the dirt with ease. I hear it come up next to me like zzzzzzzzzzzzzz winding out. I just pushed the gas to like 70% and there he went.lol
But really, if you do take the Breeze seriously, I wish you luck. It would be one hell of a sleeper.lol

Yeah, no one in their right mind could possibly think your car is fast.

i'm looking to tweak out a 2000 olds alero (seriously i am.....ok stop laughing already geeze) and needs some help. got a friend helping me with the work but need some good adivce and suggestions on parts. definatly droping a supercharger....we already decided that i have the 6cyl 3400 sfi engine. also changeing the standard air intake system to an open air cone system any1 have suggestion on how to do this without either killing myself and my intake?

You werent kidding when you said a Breeze is not an easy one to mod. However its doing what I want it to. Like I said I know nothing next to engines and crap, so mods on my current car have all been very simple. No Im not loaded, and my current project is to get my computer opperational again. However, there is much work I to be done on my car.
Also, I dont know what the 14s are or the 9.5: 1 CR is, and when Im being sarcastic I shall mark it with a tag.
Peace!

ET of running a 400m race from a dead stop. Or 1320 feet. Its 25% of a mile.
Compression ratio(CR) is the ratio of how much your AF ratio is compressed. 9.5:1 means the volume inside the combustion chamber is decreased by 9.5 times of its original size. Compresses the Air/Fuel mixture.

You should perhaps make your own thread in the section associated with your car. Forced induction implies that air is being forced into the engine. Our discussions extend far beyond intakes as there are sections that discuss that type of subject. I would recommend trying a different forum as I don't know anyone in this section that owns an Alero. Good luck with your car though.

Ok more questions-
Whats the difference between a blower and a turbocarger? I mean dont they basicly do the same thing which is force air into the engine by useing a fan of sorts?
How do you know which turbocharger is right for your vehicle? How do you know your not going to blow up your engine? Is that what boost meters are for, to mesure the pressure in your chamber?
Im sure Ill have more but Ill leave these for now. Thanks for the help.
