2004 Taurus Problems

I just purchased a 2004 Taurus about 2 weeks ago - it has only 20,000 miles. I noticed it was dragging when I drove it and that the gas mileage was not what it should be. I took it back in to get it check and they just told me the fuel pump needs to be replaced, the back speaker needs to be replaced and the motor in the front driver door needs to be replaced as well. From an appearance standpoint it is in excellent condition. This is my first time owning a Ford - I did not buy it through Ford but the dealership I did buy it through is giving me the option to turn the car in and purchase something different if this makes me uncomfortable - I have to let them know something soon -am I looking at a future of nothing but repairs? Would like to hear from anyone who has some sound advise. Thanks!

Hmm... Did you happen to run the VIN through CARFAX or get the report from the dealer? I wonder if it was a rental car?

Anyway--if you're having the option of completely getting your money back and getting a different car, I would consider it. I like these cars but this is terribly early to be having these failures. Would they let you swap it for a comparable '04? I can't help but think the dealer might be worried that you are going to pull a lawsuit on them; you might want to look into the lemon laws in your state to see how bad it has to get.

The up side is that you have a lot of warranty time left. Of course, any '04 with that mileage is going to have the same coverage.

Best of luck; let us know what you decide.

Thanks for your reply - I did not run the VIN through CarFax - I will do it now - the dealer said it was not a rental car but I am not sure I believe that- Again thanks!

Thanks again for the tip - I checked it out and it turns out is was a rental and had electrical work done on it in November of 04 - it was sold shortly thereafter. I beginning to think they might know something I don't.

You are probably technically stuck with the car since you didn't check the carfax first, but if the dealer is lying to you, I would try to get out of it if he'll let you. I, personally, would NOT buy a rental car.

Just came back from the dealer - we are now in the process of looking for another car - they have been real accommodating - Thanks again for your help

If it "drags" when you test drive it, don't buy it!
