98 Civic EX D16Y8 replacement

I bought this car new and have put 205,000+ miles on it. It still runs fairly decent. During the early miles I always wanted to, for lack of a better term, "soup" it up. But I wasnt in the position to do so at that time, now I am but it now has those high miles. Heres what I'm looking to do. I would like to replace the engine. I would like to try and stick with one manufacturer for all my needs. With that being said I have two question.
1. Should I replace the engine with another rebuilt D16Y8? Or search for another compatible engine?
2. If I use another rebuilt D16Y8 is there a supplier out there that can provide me with all my needs?
I am not a seasoned mechanic and the simpliest solutuion will be the best for me.

well, maybe I have asked a question that violates some board rules or something, not sure, maybe I should read the rules.
heres my plan;
replace the D16Y8 with a B18C5. from everything Ive read this appears to be the easiest swap and also provides alot of power.
As far as aftermarket engine components, suspension, and brakes go I guess I will just mix it up.
Thanks anyway.

yes that is one of the more expencive swaps but has much potential.
You may be looking at $4,000 or more!!!!!!

Yeah - youre right. I would expect to spend 4 or 5k for the complete initial swap. But I have more than got my money out of this car. Like I said, I have +205k on this engine with not one major repair. Theres no reason why I couldnt find another Civic to put the old engine in or part the old engine out on ebay. Am I crazy? I have the room to do it and am extemely excited about the thought of installing an engine. This engine appears to be the best route. Does anyone disagree or have another suggestion that would better fit my needs? If so, say so. Thats why I'm posting.

I agree with swapping out ur engine, great we are all for swaps here. As for selling the old one on E-Bay.....Save your self the stress D engines you can find anywhere dirt dirt cheap just about free. BUt yea if you got the loot do the swap new engine and tranny. You do realize B18 are just about as good as they get for your civic and people dont usually swap these out to get too and from work but rather to race...Just decide what direction your looking to go in with this car so you can save yourself money in the long run.

Its not going to be used as a primary means of transportation any longer. I bought a mazda that I use for back and forth to work. This honda will be a project. A long project I might add.
Q. If I buy the JDM engine will my OBD11 scan tool work?

with the money you are looking at spending, you may also want to look into Getting a K series.

this uses new technology, around the same price, continue to be made, mods will soon be readly available, not to hard to find a full swap (ebay) and look damn nice in a 6th gen.
this is my opinion, I have the exact same car as you and am looking at a K swap.

If you want to know any more info on it just tell me and i have a few sites. i have done hours of research and might be able to save you some time.

Yeah - I'll definitely take a look at the sites you have found. Please post them. I didnt think a K series would be a very easy swap.
Also, to go back one step. Will a generic OBD11 scan tool work on a JDM engine? Anyone know for sure?

I guess I should really start a new topic about this and I probably will but – I’m working from the inside out to start. I have approx. 75% of the interior out of the car and I am looking at sound control. There are numerous manufacturers of dyna-mat type products out there. Has anyone seen a comparison on them that identifies the weight versus sound control? In other words, what weighs the least with the most desired sound control properties? I have ordered two books - car stereo cookbook first edition and the second addition, due out 4/29/05. This also might address this but I doubt it.

this may take a little while to load but it is what you are looking for!!!!!!!http://www.hasport.com/Tech/Installs/EKK1.pdf“K20
This can be found in the new EP3, the RSX (base and Type S) as well as other cars across the world (RSX R, etc). This is the future of the swap IMHO. There is a writeup on installing one of these in one issue of Sport Compact Car magazine (June 2004 I *think*) Pros
200 hp 158 ft/lbs torque (RSX R)
I-VTEC
Respond VERY well to bolt ons
6 speed transmission
Most have very low miles Cons
Still super expensive
More difficult swap than a B or D Well, there you have it people. I've outlined some of the pros cons on some of the most popular swaps.”
This search gave me a lot of hits

according to the link i found at the bottom of the page from the last link you posted, the "K" type engine isn't compatible with the 6gen cars :(

i was really excited for a moment. in the hours of research done, did you find anything that said its feasible to sawp the "K" type engine into a 6th gen car? i know they did it with the 96 hatchback but they did a nice amount of custom work to do it....

here's were the rain on my parade came from:

according to this its possible. its just not going to be as easy as say a B series.
I'm going to call each vendor and get theyre opinion. when your talking about spending 6,000 though they can say anything will work. I found alot about this once. I'm going to have to research again and this time save the freaking links I find.

this is a link to a thread i started a month or so ago

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=376240

It is compatable, Hasport does make engine mounts for a K series to go into the EK(EJ) chassi
one of the links above (hasport) gives a comnplete walk though of it.
read the knew link i gave you. it may help a little more with chassi info.

thanks. after I started reading that I remembered that I had read it before. Specifically because it started to get so confusing. I thought I had the chassis info straight until I read that post the first time. Then I had to go back and research chassis types again. but after reading it the second time, b/c you posted the link, its not as confusing. I think, just kidding.

I do have a few concerns -
1. power steering (2002-and-up Civic Si idler pulley (goes where power steering pump was)
2. air conditiong & cooling system

not sure if the power steering is even possible like the cooling and ac sys.

as sohcfreak97 said "Yeah....no P/s...and Alot Of Bs...some Ppl Got P/s...forgot Waht They Did Though" I'm assuming Bs is BULLSHIT?

yeah i was confused for a long time myself on the whole chassi thing

I have been trying to find out if you can put power stearing in or not.

this is a bigger engine, and with more space being taken up i just dont know if it will fit. people with the h22 swaps have the same problem.
I am not real worried about AC though, i could live without it. power stearing is such a nice feature.
