another war story from iraq

maybe some of you remember the story of my cousin in the marines. who got into the 3 hour shootout. well here is another story he told me, as he just got back from iraq, safe and sound.

my cousin marshall, and 13 other marines were sent on a mission to go get the major, who had been traped in an abandoned building. the major had a few guys with him, but not enough to fight of the iraqi's who were firing non stop with AK-47's at the building.
so as marshall and his boys get to the scene, gun fire breaks loose scattering the iraqi's and giving them room to go inside the building, when the major meets up with them, they attempt to come out, as to there suprise, lots more iraqi's came back, with more firearms.
the marines end up stuck in the abondon building. bieng shot at all night. its pitch black in the place and they come to realize there probably gonna have to stay in there overnight. one of the marines comes from another room and asks marshall. "were's the major?" marshall points in the direction. the guy takes one step and falls down an elavator shaft. they all run to the spot and beam there sure fire lights down the whole and yell "are you ok" just moans and sounds of pain is all they get. the marine lives.
dawn arives and the marines are on there way back to base. and the major see's something out on the cemetery land. he tells one of the marines to go down in the tomb (for those of you who dont know, the iraqi people have walkways down to the caskets under ground) and if anything moves, shoot it. the marine pumps himself up to go and runs to it, and down underground. a few seconds later the marines here gunfire, about 10 rounds go off.
30 seconds later he comes up with blood on his face, all over his clothes and he looks like he just seen a ghost. he looks at the major and says "something moved" the next day the major comes back and tells the guy that it was a women he shot.
the marine was greatly upset and almost to the point of tears. whent he major tells him "dont worry, the women had 2 rpg's right next to her, she was planning on blowing us all to kingdom come" the major seen something go up and down at the tomb, she was peaking and waiting to blow them all away.

Glad your cousin made it home safe.

Your story repeatedly uses the term Iraqi to describe the people your cousin was fighting.Has the practice of labelling all those who resist the occupation as 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' ceased?

The way that you tell it, he was fighting against the very people he was sent to liberate.Your story indicates that there were probably 20 or more people in the building.Your cousin, his group of 13, the major, and sundry other soldiers. If they were outgunned by Iraqis, the resistance movement is more organised than the authorities would like us to believe. This is not the work of 'an isolated pocket of insurgents' ,this is beginning to look like a platoon.
If the war had been everything that it was claimed to be,the WMD would have been captured, the insurgents routed,Bin Laden and Hussein would have been captured and tried, and the new Iraqi government would be running its own affairs from the safety of the popular support of its liberated citizens.

I have nothing but the highest praise for those still working in appalling conditions in Iraq. They are doing their duty as best they can. However, it is clear from your story that the reality of soldiering in Iraq is vastly different to the bullshit put out by the suits that sent them there.

Youngvr4- glad your cousin and the other Marines made it out. Insurgents have women in combat. We exterminated quite a few in Nam. The enemies use them because they think us nice Western boys will hesitate if we encounter them. Your cousin now knows what every man who has ever seen combat knows. The reason you do the things you do is to protect your buddies and self preservation 2nd. NOTHING will stand in your way to keep your pals alive.

I agree that the media isn't giving us the correct story - or that at least they aren't allowed to SEE what would lead them to tell the correct story.

'Naki's comments about the suits is right---government editing of the reality that is Iraq.

I'm amused by the people who argue that the enemy is wrong to use women in combat.I'm sure that the many female members of the US military currently on active duty in hostile territory would take the inferrence that they should stick to lesser roles as a slap in the face. What happened way back in Nam is of no relevence to the contemporary theatre of war, and if the Pentagon insists on replaying it,they will lose this one just as comprehensively.

Naki twitch didn't say using women was wrong, he said that the insurgents underestimate our willingness to kill females.

Glad your cousin is ok. Am I the only one that sees this as how unorganized the insurgents are. If 4 marines can hold off a group of insurgents, then 13 marines can hold off a much larger force??? Either the Marines are extremely good at what they do, or the insurgents are retarded. Im going with both!!

Sorry naki this war will succeed and democracy will be spread across the middle east!

Codycool- When the Russians used women during WW2 in combat tell me you wouldn't be just as dead if one of them shot you. Women associated with insurgents is basic. In every conflict they have had fingers on triggers so this is no different.

Sorry naki this war will succeed and democracy will be spread across the middle east!

This scares the hell out of me. Another mouthpiece for the Bush administration's propaganda department.

Visualize this scenario: It's the height of the Cold War and someone posts a similar slogan substituting "communism" for democracy. How would that go over, do you think? Better yet- a German SS officer in 1942 proudly announces that the great struggle will succeed and the Nazi ideology will be spread throughout the world! Apply the same formula to North Vietnam, if it pleases you...

Good point of view, RSX, and I agree. I maintain that countries should be able to have whatever form of government they choose, not what form of government is chosen for them.

Democracy is a good thing, but ramming it down the throats of other people isn't a good idea.

Anyhow yourgvr4- before people here begin endicting your friend for murder, have him go to the VA and get some free counseling. They got groups he can meet with other vets in too. Joining the VFW or American Legion and talking to guys that have stories from their times and their wars might help later. That's all that is important is getting him on track mentally not all the political bullhockey that was puked up here.
