Cheap Lowering

hey whats a cheap way to lower the front end of my bug? i dont care about ride quality, since im going to gut the suspension and put it on air bags anyways.

If it's a standard they used to make a cheap kit that just pulled down on the sway bar. It wasn't a good way but it was cheap. I'm not sure if it's even still available.

is there anything, for example heating the springs for cars that have springs, that i can do cheap?

The torsion spring adjusters are still available. About $30 bucks a set.

The beam must be dismantled, cut and the adjusters welded in place of the torsion spring lock stud.

The other route (which I recommend over the adjusters) is a set of drop spindles (comes with disc brake conversion). You'll maintain front end geometry that way. About $350.00.

I bought a lowering/raising kit about 18 years ago and never used it, I think it was called a select-a-drop but not sure. It is made of steel and has two "c" shaped flat pieces that are notched to weld to the beams, they have bolts that run through them horizonally and the bolts are drilled and have a long bolt that runs vertically through the two horzontal bolts. Now I never had any instructions so I don't have a clue as to how it's supposed to work. I would like to use it now as we've just restored my grannys "77 for my son, Has any one ever seen these and know how to install it? I'd be eternally gratefull for any help. bama

Hey that "select a drop" front end you guys are talking about is the cheapest way to drop the front end besides dismantling the front beam, and just pulling out torsion springs, which gives you a horrible ride... the select a drop can be used to slam the front end while still maintaining the original geometry by doing a little cheap mod... You can get your front beam cut and converted to a select a drop by taking it to "Griffins machine shop" in Paramount, CA. (not sure where you live) it goes for $75 bucks, and you just bolt it back in like it came out, but to maintain the original geometry you'll need to get a front beam shim kit which you can get from an aircooled parts dealer... I believe empi has a kit. Well make sure you also get the longer front beam bolts so you have enough threads to hold hte beam on... DO NOT USE THE SAME BOLTS they're too short. The shims are a a few bucks, and so are the bolts. The whole deal should be under $100 depending on if you can find someone to do the beam locally, removal for a first timer should fall within an hour, and installation should come in around 30- 60 min. you'll need some jack stands and a good jack

you could get drop spindles, that would lower them. or you could get an adjustable front beam (which would be the prefered way)
