Surging Sonoma 4.3

I have a 96 Sonoma extended cab with 4.3 and automatic trans.
The check engine light has come on and code indicates TPS. We have changed it twice and the light continues to come on. It also surges when traveling 30 to 50 mph. Doesn't matter if cruise is on or off, or if air cond is on or off. I believe the surging might be related to the TPS code continuing to come on. I don't notice the surging at idle or at interstate speeds. Does anyone have a similar experience, and do you think the TPS code and the surging are related? incidently, I notice that the transmission shifts different when the Check Engine light is on. It comes on about half of the time and half of the time it doesn't.

check the wiring going from the TPS.
