i have a 95 esscort 88k just the other day my wife was driving and the car stalled she started it up and the idle was rough and kept stalling. it was making a distinct knocking the test code showed up as 33 egr is either not open or not properly seated. I just recentely tuned it up. after hearing the car i determined that it may be starving for fuel, so i changed the fuel filter and the knocking went away. but still the car continues to idle rough and still stalls and has a lack of power when i drive. and yes the code 33 is still their. do you have any suggestions.

Symptom sounds like the EGR valve is stuck open. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the EGR valve (engne running) and see if the valve shaft moves. If it doesn't while the engine is running disconnect a vaccum hose that is handy, and put it on the valve and observe. No movement, valve is stuck or bad.
