Swirl marks

I have a 2000 Jetta that is black. It has a lot of swirl marks in it from the previous owner. I wax it religiously but I would really like to get the swirl marks out of the clear coat. Any suggestions on how to get them out and what brands to use? How many steps should I take? What should I use - wax, polish, glaze, abrasives, clay bars? And what order do i do them in? Thanks a lot guys!

After washing the car, try some Meguire's paint cleaner, followed by Meguire's polish. Finally, wax with Zymol (if you have the money), or something cheap that's still of decent quality, like Turtle wax.

Waxing alone isn't enough to remove swirls. It all depends how bad it is, being black it could be really bad. In that case your best off taking it to the pro's for the best finish. If it's not so bad Meguiars or Mothers multi steps work ok. Clay bars are a must after washing, before polish, glaze, or wax. They clean the paint like no other, making the later steps much easier.

Are you sure they are swirls, as in "buffer swirls" and not marring (also known as spider-webbing, halo-scratches)?

If they take on a 3D halogram type look, like a flowing ribbon, within your paint then you most likely have buffer swirls. These will need something more aggressive to remove then the marring marks.

Marring mark are introduced into your paint from washing and drying and can be many times removed with a orbital polisher, like the PC, and some mild (clear coat safe) polish. As already noted wax alone will do nothing for these marks, it may temporarily "fill" or hide the marks but that's it.

Buffer swirls are introduced into the paint with a high speed polisher and in many cases can only be removed with a high speed polisher, kinda like fighting fire with fire, but this time the job needs to be done properly. Contact a respected professional detailer in your area and have them evaluate your paint.

The initial polishing was done with a rotary then finished with a Cyclo.

Paint marring is quite simple to fix and alot of the time it is easily fixed by hand with paint conditioners. That was an excellent photo demo Anthony.

Sure #7 is a nice product but it will not "solve" any issues as it cannot correct the paint it just fills and hides the scratches and only light ones at that.

It is best to seek to correct the problem first and then hide any left over imperfections.
