It really depends on what you have for paint. For an old fashioned laquer job...Mothers California Gold.
For a clearcoat job I use Meguires Gold Class

well i have found that on cars with metal flake, or like a metallic base use liquid glass, made by turtle wax. i have been using meguiers, they have great wax too, but it seems that my RS shines better with the liquid glass.

I use Wizard Works products, but I think wax is definately another area where it's really personal preference. Try some different ones and see which you really like.

If you wash and wax your car by hand how long does it last compared to the 5$ washes?

To see the car perfectly clean, it's so worth spending that much time doing it. Taking your car to those crappy touchless car wash stalls is such a waste, they do a very poor job.

Well it doesn't answer my question. How long does the good wax last if you do it by hand vs machine wash?

a good thorough wax can last for months, should say something about it on the back label of the wax bottle.

Granitize F1 Finish wax is what i have been using since 1985. I only have to apply it once a year and the water beads rolls off like water on a ducks back.
It is the easiest to use by far that i have had experience with . It is easy to apply - cant put on too much the car will take off of the applicator only what it needs and no more.
super easy to remove the hazed wax and burnish to a deep shine. (i use cheese cloth) Will remove "fine" scratches and swirls.
This is specially formulated for "trouble Colors" Black - Blue -Red , but can be used on any color.
Try it you will like it

On my 91 I use Maguires spray on wax every three months, and in between, Meguires spray on detailer. It makes the paint look brand new...
