Need help with subs and amps?!

I am looking to but some subs but i dont understand when it says that is 4 ohm or whatever and the amp is multi channels or mono channels or 2 channels. If the subs are dual voice coil and dual 4 ohm what kind of amp do i need. PLEASE HELP!

Best bet is to take your car to a goodguys or circuit city or a best buy they should be able to tell you what works best for the type of music you listen to. Certain amps and subs are made ecspeacially for high bass out put for rap where others are made for rock and country.

I would actually take it to a specific car audio store. I have had some issues with Best buy. They put my head unit in wrong and hooked up my subs backwards(the wires). Guys at car audio places are usually pretty good. That is just my opinion and experience. Good luck

PM me and I'll tell you what you need to know. Please do not rely on the big chain stores. Most don't know anymore than you and usually work off of comission.

Quickly, usually most subs are 4ohm single voice coils. Some are dual voice coils. This is when you have 2 speaker terminals. Channels on amps usually is 2, 4, 6 or one channel. Most common for subs is 2 channel or one channel. You might hear them same mono sub amp.

As far as what amp needed for what ever subs, just look at the ohm rating. The amp should read something like 200RMS @ 4 ohm then 400watts @ 2 ohm mono. That means you hook up 2 4ohm subs to one channel on the amp so you can get all fo the 400 watts.

Just to answer your question, ohm's is the amount of current it takes to make your speaker move,or the resistance of the voice coil.
4ohm speaker moves fairly easily. 8ohm speaker will have a stiffer voice coil thus higher resistance = 8ohm and so on.

Make sure your amp has a higher rating than your speakers you never want to drive your amp past 75%
A 60watt amp will blow a 100watt speaker because of the distortion that occurs past 75%

Well if i have a 1000 watts total in to subs what would the amp need to be where i wont blow it.

you want to look at RMS of a sub, not the "peak power"....thats just to make the sub look "good", has nothing to do with performance....same goes for an amp

you are totally right to hell with BEST-BUY or CURCUIT-CITY they are horsesheiser and there products are lamo. when it comes to car audio you gotta go to those small shops on the main drags. these are usually the guys that deal with the real deal brands like JL AUDIO, DIRECTED, CADENCE, HIFONICS, SOUNDSTREAM, those are real brands. sony, pioneer, and rockford fosgate can go straight to hell, do not past go, do not collect your $200 bones.

Check out crutchfield.com. They have a learning section that explains EVERYTHING! You may find out that you really can do it yourself. Its not real hard but you do need to read and learn alot if you have never done it.

10" Component Subwoofer and the rms is 250 watts each so what should my amp be to where i wont blow the speaker

As long as your amp has more watts that your speakers your safe.
And then just follw the 75% rule. Don't push any audio equipment past
75% or going to blow something.

I aggree thats where the other 25% is, "Peak Power" just for peaks,
You don't want to operate there.

Same goes for anything realy,you probabley wouldn't get a day out of your motor if you ran it at 100%

hey convertedchevy, if I was you I'd go with the Infinity Basslink. Its a 10" sub with a built-in 200 wait amp (guessing its aroung 150 RMS). For $300 I'd say its a good buy if you are going for sound quality. One of my friends has one and I'd say that it hits pretty hard for a 10' sub. You can find it at Crutchfield.

alright im sorry i have to come off like this but whats infinity anyways? infinity well i would have to say they are loosing the car audio war big time. i highly doubt a 200 watt amp 10" sub is really going to make you happy unless you want subtle bass. if you want some sound you gotta get at least a 600 watt mono amp . digital is the way to go, they dont overheat if u use them properly and they sound great.
if you want some thump 2 10's from JL audio would sound excellent. i seriously wouldnt buy infinity, rockford, pioneer, kenwood, lightning audio, or any of those cheesy brands. if you want real subs get your self at least some alpine type R's. if you want serious pounding get some 12"w6's from JL or some aluminum eclipse. all depends on your cash flow. sealed box is the way to go you get the best chest pounding bass.

He said there that he was looking at a 10" Infinity so I was just trying to give him another idea. But as was stated, it’s all about cash flow. If convertedchevyman has the money, ya it'd be great to hook him up with some JLs but if not, I think the Basslink will do him just fine, IF he is not going for the hey, I am going to break out my neighbors car windows with by bass thing, if he is going for that then I'd recommend something else.
