99 passat 1.8t abs/break lights problem

I just purchased 99 passat 1.8T engine and it has around 77k. The only problem that I've found was the abs light is ON all the time and break light is blinking when hand break is released. When I took it to the mechanic, he tried 3 types of decoders, and all of them said something about communication problem. I ohmed out the 4 abs sensors from the abs plug in the engine compartment and all were same (so i presume they were O.K. Anyone has an idea what is the problem?

Also, do I need to change the timing belt on it?

You need a VW or a VAG-COM scanner to communicate withthe ABS system. I would go ahead & change the T-belt, I've know several 1.8's that didn't make it to the 80K inspection. Forget about the 105K replacement interval.

The mechanic that I've took my car to, was VW mechanic, I thought that he had the right equipment, so I guess the best bet for me is to go to the dealer. As for the T-belt--I'll try to squeeze the change early next week. I probably need to change the:
- T-belt
- Pulley
- Water pump
is that right, or is there anything else?

What do you think the price for those run these days w/labor ($600)?

I appreciate your input on the matter.

I have found out in different forum that this problem has occured in many vehicles, thus to conclude a problem in design of the ABS module. It can be sent to be repaired for $250 and 2-year warranty. The name is Don Messina and phone is 1-800-257-3395 ext 30. This forum has lasted for a year and 3 months and concluded about a faulty abs module which can be taken-off quickly and sent to Florida with 2-3 turnaround days. Adress:

That is the most common problem, but I would try to get the system properly diagnosed before throwing parts at it. It could be alot of other things. The Bentley forums are a very good source of info.
