cv joint ?????(question)

i think the joints need some attn. can hear 'em when i turn (at times mostly b4 the cars warm) and w/ the wheel turned in reverse all the time, its not that loud, and i cant tell which side its coming from. my question: do they need repair, or can i maybe get away with giving them a greasing? can they be greased w/out stripping them all the way down? i.e. outta the cage?and if they need replacing, is it worth getting something like that from the salvage yard?? thnx.

Check the CV boots, make sure there are no holes or splits. Check for grease on the inside of your wheel. Try a new CV boot with high temp gease in, normal grease wont cut it as the temp from your disks will turn it to liquid.

Grease up the CV joint and run it for a few days to let the grease do its job, if its still making a noise then chances are its dead, check the wheel bearings aswell as they will rumble when they are on there way out. (check for top to bottom movement in the wheel)

also wouldnt the wheel bearings rattle all the time if they were gonna? the main noise im getting is in the higher rpm range

Jack the car up, grab the top of the wheel and the bottom of the wheel and try to waggle it (not in the direction of rotation), if it rocks then the chances are your wheel bearings have gone, If they are in the early stages of failing you wont be able to feel any movement.
Do you mean high RPM range or higher speeds?
Wheel bearings are usually more noticable at low speeds so I`m stumped with that one.
Its hard to tell without actually being there to have a look.

check out my other post i just put up on bad springs. but i just got under it up front and played w/ the axleshaft it rotates maybe 1/2 inch either way. the boots are filthy, but i didnt see any OBVIOUS tears. when rotating the shaft i could hear a very faint (real faint) vibration/grindy noise from the other end of the shaft in what i think may be where it connects to the ctr driveshaft (just past the inner cv) hard to say tho i didnt have a lot of time today and had many, many distractions(cheerleadergirl next door and 7 of her friends decided to clean their cars out) couldnt keep my eyes @ home so to speak

Sounds like the CV joints are shot--that's why you're getting the clicking/popping noise only when you're turning. If it was your wheel bearings, it more than likely would signal itself as a thrumming, humming, or rattling that was speed related.
You can try to repack the CVs, but if they're already clicking, they may be too far gone. You wouldn't have to completely disassemble the joint, but that's the best way to do it. In either case, you'll need to clean out all the old grease before you repack. If you have a parts washer, that's the way to go; if not, you can try soaking them in kerosene, paint thinner, or the like. Be sure to get them real clean before repacking them.
Also, put new boots on, even if the old ones are not torn. You'll have to cut the bands off the old ones anyway, and since it's not a real quick fix, it wouldn't pay to just replace the grease without doing the boots. DON'T use a new split boot--use a one-piece.
All and all not a tough job. If you think this is messy, try a front axle service on a Land Cruiser sometime:grinno:

easyest way to tell if theres rips is if thers a bunch of grease all over ur rims and the underbely of ur celica....i have FUBAR'd half shafts on my celicas and they still only clanked when stopping, going, or hard turning...its not worth the money or the time to just replace the boots becasue if you replace the outboard on either side (porbbly the one thats bad) you have to replace them both and thats more then half the cost it would be to just buy a new half shaft...so just buy new ones...
FYI for both new ones its gunna be about $135, PM if you want instructions on how to do it if you dont know how, its fariley simple and can save you a good $100 or so instead of a shop doing it
