replacing shocks/struts

I'm what you might call automotively impared, but I think my '97 civic is probably due for some new shocks and struts, since I have 165,000 miles on the stock ones. My last tire I had replaced was kind of choppy and flat on some places, and the auto guy recommened getting my struts checked. I probably need to have somebody look at it to see what else needs replaced that goes with them, but I thought I would ask what you guys thought.

To tell you the truth I don't even know what the difference is between the shocks and the struts...I just always hear them together.

I am only looking to put on something slightly better than stock. I have no need for expensive coil overs and racing stuff. Right now I'm running on some 16" Motegi's with Yokohama Avid H4's if that makes a difference.

get some KYB AGX's .. not that much money, they get the job done and you'll have better handle.

With 165K the suspension is pretty worn out. Replacing the struts and springs wouldn't be a bad idea.

Your car uses struts. The difference between a strut and a shock is:
Struts mount with the spring attached - example macpherson strut
Shocks mount seperate from springs - example leaf springs and shocks on the rear of a pick-up truck
Struts are a type of shock absorber, they both absorb energy from springs.

HP's are decent for stock height or lowering springs with 1.75" drop.

AGX's would be better if the car was lowered up to 1.75" because they have adjustable damping.

For springs look into H&R's, they have minimal drop .75" or medium drop 1.5" springs. $150 www.tirerack.com

You should replace the mounts but the boots only really need to be replaced if they are torn/cracked or don't fit the new struts.

option 1:

- KYB AGX (adjustable)
- stock springs

option 2:

- GR-2 (non adjustable)
- H&R OE sport springs (0.75" drop)
- shim rear upper arms with 1 washer on each bolt

option 3: (I have this, 97 EX sedan)

- KYB AGX (adjustable)
- H&R OE sport springs (0.75" drop)
- shim rear upper arms with 1 washer on each bolt

Other options:
- Koni's instead of KYB (better strut, more expensive)
- camber kit for rear

I like the OE sport springs because they give slightly stiffer (~20%) suspension, better handling feel, less roll, but are still comfortable with reasonable ground clearance. Great for the street.
