something has just started to come up on my 01 passport. it has 50k miles. sometimes and its pretty random. when i accel. the tranny dosent engage it just revs really high(depending on how fast i want to accelerate) and bites really hard. it seems pretty bad but i dont know what could be wrong. ive never had the tranny flushed which was going to happen on my next oil change.
can anybody tell me whats wrong??
Thanks!!!

Sounds like you're low on transmission fluid.

I'd personally park it until it can be serviced. These transmissions don't like low fluid, they will burn in nothing flat.

Do a search for ATF, level check, 4L30E, etc..etc... It is easy to check for proper level & you have to pump ATF up into the fill hole. Mercon/dextron III universal type ATF works well for the 4L30E, or any quality dextron III compatible will do.

where do i add tranny fluid? on the manual is says right next to the brake Master Cylinder is the Power Steering Fluid Resivior but on the cap of that it says Dexron ATF 3?! do they use the same fluid? the resivior bottle is full to the max line so im pretty sure that im not low.
i did some more driving and what i explained earlier in my forst post is that it only happens when i make a right hand turn. never any time else. its wierd?
can anyone help me??
i dont want to pay 100+ to get my tranny flushed and have the same thing happening again.
Thanks!!!!!

....but if you have never flushed it before, don't you think 50k is a good numbe to have it flushed?
FYI, you don't add tranny fluid under the hood.
check out the FAQ's on how and where to do it.

You can't add transmission fluid from the engine compartment; you have to pump it into the transmission pan underneith the truck.
It could very well be happening when only making corners if it's low; as the vehicle is leaning towards one side.
Personally, at 50K miles it's due for a flush & refill anyway, I wouldn't want to jeopordize driving a might-as-well-be brand new truck (in comparison to my 136K miles) with this kind of issue.
You will fry that transmission, and I've heard they're NOT cheap.
FWIW, if you regularly take care of them, these transmissions will last quite a while. I've pulled 3-4K pound boats up & over Loveland Pass, I-70 corridor, hauled over 1K pounds in the back, been up and down thousands of dirt, bumpy roads, mild 4-wheeling, etc more times then I can remember with my 97 V6 Automatic, and I have yet, (knocking on wood) to have any transmission problems.
I do very regularly have it serviced every 30-35K miles, and I refuse to go over 35K miles without a flush. Just my .02cents.

ok so i called around about doing a flush on my Passport and the prices ranges from 40-200dollars! they also said it might be extra if the exaust is in the way? some places said that my car has no filter and some says they do. who do i believe? i almost tempted to do it my self. i contacted the Honda Dealership and they want $45 for a drain and refil. and 165 for flush.
what are the advantages of Draining and Refilling it instead of Flushing it.
Thanks!

There are no advantages to the drain and refill since you can only drain 3.5 of the 9'ish quarts in the system.
The only way I would recommend doing this is if you are going to do this yearly and also, if you plan on dropping the pan every 60k to change the filter.
The flush is theoretically suppose to back flush out the screen filter (and there is one). If you stick with 30k flush, I would drop the pan after 100k.
The only real advantage to do the partial swap is if you did it after you have +80k on the fluid (again, I would drop the pan and replace the filter). Doing it this way there is less of a chance of having a slipping tranny, due to all new fluid.

yeah thanks! i was hoping just to drain and refill to get rid of the problem in my car. if it does? because i dont want to spend 200dollars to have the same problem again. im fine wth spending 40-50dollars to see if it is just low on fluid.

The first thing to check is to see if it is low.
if you do it your self, it is a very mess job; and that is why I alway take it to my dealer to have it flushed (90 bucks).
I have never ever checked my fluid level on this truck (if I had a dipstick I would!).

i talked to my friends neighbor who works at a Preferred Honda Dealer. and he basically said that a flush would actually make my problems worse. he told me to go to a transmission specialist to see whats happening to basically figure out whats wrong. im gonna take it to them soon. so if its a big problem and its costs way too much money to fix im just gonna get rid of my passport and get a WRX.
