They cause wear on your alternator and other belts (i believe) and if you are going to put a stereo in especially it will make a difference. In my opinon, unless you are going all performance dont bother, you will only get like 3-5 hp.

Do they sell lightened stock pulleys for dsms? I remember back when I had the old 3kgt I was looking on http://www.3sxperformance.com/engine.asp and they had a pulley that was the same size as stock so it wouldn't cause electrical difficulties but it was lighter so it freed up that horsepower without the side effects.

I havent noticed any difference in power. My pulley is bigger and lighter. Havent noticed ANY difference in anything except performance. You do get a rather large gain. Especially if you're replaceing the stock 10+lb pulley for a 1+lb pulley. Well worth the money. If it does cause problems to the alternater, it's not like those are expensive anyway. My 2 cents

There has been lots and lots of threads on this sub and everyone has there own idea of what they think it does to the internals. I would say "no" don't get one. Please don't get one from ebay. I don't think they are balenced at all. Even overboost .com would not discus this topic. The alternater is not effected buy the underdrive pully. The crank is. So like i said do some major surching. I don't wanna give you the wrong info and you mess your shit up.
Just 2cents
Now do you mean UNDERDRIVE pully, or all the other pullys? alternator, water pump, power steering? Underdrive is the crank pully.

I think as long as you keep the engine in good running shape, making sure no small problems become big ones, you should be ok. My engine has somewhat low-miles (84k). I wouldnt get it with one with 150k+

To add to that...
I would also make sure you have good mounts. IF the pulley does cause lots of wear on the crank, you want the engine sturdy. You dont want the crank going 1 direction, and the engine going in another direction. Its hard to explain, but I think you know what I mean.

No your right, but I would say save you money for something that can get you some real power. You do have a turbo right? If you do the don't sweet the little power you will get from a pully. If you are N/A then go a head and get one just don't get a cheep ebay one. Here is what Overboost.com says about it.

"Note that we've avoided the topic of underdrive pulleys, one of the most hotly debated items on automotive chat forums. Not that underdrive pulleys are a bad thing in and of themselves, but most of the pulleys out there are not dampened, and that's what leads to hot arguments online. If nothing else, why save weight on a pulley when you can save more weight in a larger diameter at the flywheel? Anyway, let the email flow to [email protected] for now."
This is the hole thing if you wanna learn about damper......http://www.overboost.com/story.asp?id=1283

Sounds good. The Bomz pulleys are supposed to be good. That's what I bought. Did some research before hand. The flywheel thing is also true. Lightweight pulleys are only really good with a better flywheel. My mechanic himself even said that. I have a sure stock tranny, but when I replace it, ill get a better clutch and flywheel. I guess it balances everything out a little better.

That is what i was told, that if you get an underdrive pully you need to get a light wight flywheel.
