Muffler Installation

I went to a muffler shop to see if the mufflers i have fit my car ... and sadly they didn't. As stealth told me in an earlier thread, the driver's side was able to clear the muffler, but the passenger side was too slim. Absolutely no way it could fit, so i guess i'll have to sell them.

So the shop owner gave me an offer. He told me he'd order 2 dual mufflers that WOULD fit my car, also order a catback, and install the cat to the mufflers. He said he'd do it all parts and labor for $525. The mufflers cost $88 each. Unfortunately i don't have $525, so i want to go down to the shop tomorrow and ask if he could lower the price to atleast $450. So my question to you guys is how much is a catback? Is $525 too much for this job or is that fair? I really want to get this installation done before April 9th ... can't pay $525 though that's a little pricey at the moment.

Depends on 2 things.
1) diameter of catback
2) is it a namebrand catback or is he just building it himself

If he is building it himself, and it is smaller than 3" I wouldn't pay over $200 for catback and installation

If I were you I'd find mufflers you like...bring them in, and find someone to do it on the side, build you a 3" mandrel bent catback and install it all for $2-300

Apparently the best dual mufflers for our cars aren't made anymore (origional power-vault), the new ones are too big and don't fit right. If anyone knows of a dual tip muffler that fits let me know! My shop is looking too but to no avail.

You guys are lucky you have performance shops. I can't think of one place in Syracuse that specializes in performance.

Can't shops just modify a muffler to have that dual tip look? I always thought that was possible and was gonna just have some shop do that when I upgrade my exhaust system (probably gonna go with Borla by the way). If not, it's gonna be a sad day... :(

Well the guy at the shop pointed at some dual mufflers in a catalog. I asked them "You sure they'll fit?" and he said "Yea yea" The catback is 2.5'', and he said he was going to order it, so he's not going to build it himself. I think i should maybe ask around more muffler shops. I have $310 in my pocket right now just for my pipes and i can get $100 more within a few days. I just hope i can get a good deal from a shop. $525 seemed to pricey. Is 2.5'' compared to 3'' immensely different in flow?

Yeah there is a difference, you could go 2.5", but I personally would go bigger...if you're NA, go 2.75 or 3", if you are TT go 3"+
Others may have differing opinions...these are just mine.

Hate to say it but I told you so.;) Your best bet would be to go with a single in dual out muffler. Run piping from the exits back to the stock locations and get the dual look tips from Jegs for $35 each side. This is basically called a fireman setup on 3si. It will probably make the cost alot less. $525 is just way too much. I was going to get exhaust from the manifolds all the way back to two shiny canister mufflers for $400 from my local shop. When I told him I only wanted one muffler with dual ouyts he said it would have been at most $200. Shop around.

The hardest part is finding some good dual tip mufflers, anyone know where to look for mufflers online? Don't say google or ebay, I mean a good site devoted to mufflers of all sorts. What are you guys looking at in terms of dual tip mufflers like the stock ones? I'm looking for a deep gurgling sound (as much as possible on a turbo car), not a buzing or reving sound.

Yeah me, I wanted the stock look. I was thinking maybe I could ask the guys at 3sx to do it if I bought their Borla exhaust setup but don't if they would or not.... Guess we'll see....I'll look into it more when I actually have enough money saved up for the mod.
