metal shaving in oil

ok my 05 just got its first oil change. after I was done I cut apart my oil filter to see what was in it and I found little metel shavings. My question is, is this normal from a brand new car or should this be something that I need to worry about.

Ive seen metal shavings in oil twice in all my days and both times was from bad pistons. Granted Im sure there could be umpteen dozen other reasons but Im just stating the only situations in which Ive seen metal in oil.

that sucks if that is the case good thing this thing is still under waranty.

I found metal shavings and also stuff that looks like sand in the breakin oil of my 2001 Dodge when I bought it new. I still have the truck and it runs fine, doesn't use any oil and gets good gas mileage. I wouldn't worry about it, but if it makes you sleep easier, take the filter to the dealer or independent shop and have them look at it.

meatal shavings in new cars is normal. you said you have an 05 well did the dealer or owners manual explain the break in period?? my buddy has an 02 and he could not max it out for like 1500-2000 miles due to engine break in. as far as i know flakes or spots of metal is normal for new car. metal shaving or chunks is not normal

yea they were more like flakes I guess. well that good news to here I will check the filter again the next time I change the oil to see if I have the same thing or not. thanks

how did you cut the oil filter open? is it possible that the flakes are from cutting it? i have never heard of matel shavings in a brand new car, but in regular cars ive seen then when your bearings are breaking, or piston like some one else mentioned earlier

ive seen a 2004 civic with 2500 miles on it spin a rod bearing...anything is possible

I cut it open with a regular knife. and the flakes were not were I cut the filter. For the break in period the dealer told me not to drive ata constant speed for a long period of time for about the first 500 miles or so. and I haven't gone crazy driving it.

I was thinking the same thing at first but if they are still doing the filter in the 05's like the 04's then the oil filter is made out of plastic and paper (or what ever the hell that stuff is) so there wouldnt be any metal to cut.

Frankly first time I changed the oil in my 04 after finding the damn thing that is. I took out the filter and said "you have got to be shitting me, this little cutzy POS is my filter? :sly: "

my thoughts exaclty! and its a pain in the ass to get to the oil drain plug. pluss had to go get a new socket to get the filter out.

In new engines its common to get metal flakes but if it keeps recurring i would say sum thing to the dealership. Another thing to check is if there are metal flakes on the end of your drain plug (if its magnetic) just to make sure the flakes aren't running through the engine. My grandpa just bought a 2005 dodge dakota and he had metal flakes in his oil also and after that we havent seen ne in it at all.

yea im pretty sure thats normal. check with the dealer tho incase. but my friend had an eclipse and blew the engine burning out cuzhe had an oil leak and didnt kno he ran out. we got a brand new one and there was metal shavings in it for the first oil change and the dealer also said be easy on it for about 1500 miles to break in. so u should be safe.
