Auto to Maunal

Anyone ever tried it? I've got a TH-350 tranny in my car right now that I'd like to swap out for a Richmond 6-speed. The part I'm most worried about is adding a clutch pedal, etc., and the mounts where there has never been any. Any suggestions? hints? tips? experienced input?

id stick with the th350, i got one in my 86 camaro,i personally love auto's...no clutch, just slam my shifter forward and pass the competition..ill never go to standard.

well i know a couple people that have thought about this (i personally toyed with it for a while), there have even been tv shows about it. ive gotten conflicting stories on it. most people say that its not as difficult as you would assume. the cars a designed to be either a manual or an auto so most of the stuff should be there. its certainly not a project for even the slightest novice. the best way to do it is to find a donor car, park it in the driveway, and swap parts as needed. either way its gonna cost a penny or two, but as the sayin goes: anything is possible with money...

A novice I am not when it comes to the under hood stuff, and I know it's gonna cost a pretty penny. The tranny I want alone is listed at $3100 from Summit. That's not including shipping. I'm having a difficult time finding a car like mine in a junk yard that was a standard to begin with, so I've been thinking about taking a hydraulic clutch system off a newer car, instead of the all mechanical one, and adapting it to fit mine. Hydraulic fluid lines are a lot more forgiving to work with compared to trying to perfectly align a mechanical one. :dunno: I guess I'll find out eventually.

Eh give a mechanic-buddy a call and see what they say. Doesn't hurt imo.

I know a guy that owns a tranny shop and when i asked him this same question he said that he personally wouldnt try it because you would need to cut up the console and add the clutch. but if you do it i'll give you props

What year is the camaro? i have done it in my 80Z. It fun let me tell ya. You will need new break/clutch pedels. i dont know your year so either hydro line or all the linkages for mech.

It's an 81, and i'm not too worried about having to cut up the console cuz i'm building a custom one anyway. And, as far as having to add in a clutch pedal, I'm doing a custom dash also, so i'll know exactly what to do to pull it out and mount the pedal easily.

Perfect. There are 4 bolts holding the pedles in, same bolts that hold the steering colum in. the the steering colum will drop a lil and you have the role the pedels out around the wires and stuff. and unless you are going to be running a hydraulic clutch you will need to find all the linkages, and a pushrod. throwout bearing and clutch fork. and tranny. obviously clutch and get a good one, better than what you think you need. i found that out the hard way. driveshaft length will prolly be different too. the tranny crossmember is the same however the mount may be different. at least it was the same from th-350 to muncie m20. oh yeah and for the linkage you will need to drill a hole in the firewall or the linkage. there is supposed to be a nipple where the hole is supposed to go, but i couldnt find it. for the linkage there is a pivot bar, and brace that attaches to the frame, and a bearing-ish thing that bolts to the motor. you will need all of that! use this diagram to hel you get everything for that. http://www.nastyz28.com/NGCC/pedals.html
you will need a bellhousing too, if you are running a lot of power and going to 1/4 compititions and they are strict. get a bulletproof. also for your own safety. i think it got it all, ill add more if i forgot something.

oh yeah, just a little thing but sometimes the speedo cable is on the other side on manual trannies, so you will need one that is about 6 inches longer. maybe.
