Bearing & Hub

My abs, service vehicle soon and trac off lights would come on my 2000 grand am.
I took my car to the garage to get the computer scanned and they told me that the bearings and hub needed to be replaced. I changed them on each side but the lights still stay on. Is their some sort of reset switch like with the change oil light or is their something else wrong with the car???

Disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes will clear any codes you may have. Did they tell you which one it was?. Also did you notice any damage to any wires while you were doing the install?.

Sorry John, but disconnecting the battery won't reset codes - it'll only reset the PCM maps like spark maps and A/F ratio and crap like that. On your car, in order to have the codes reset, take it to a place like Autozone and they'll be able to read them and reset them for free - plus you'll find out if there were any other codes beside the hub codes stored.

Why did the shop change the hubs? As a sealed unit, they rarely fail. Even if one does, the other usually doesn't at the same time. I would suspect you got a littled ripped off for the easy money(hubs are cake to do). Make sure they reconnected the abs wire on the hub(and actually used abs hubs)

Despite what you may have heard trouble codes on OBD2 system's can be cleared by removing the battery terminal http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/ . Read the method to clearing OBD2 codes on all the other manufacter's besides just GM. It does infact clear the codes. To read the codes you do infact need a scanner but not to clear them.

Hmmm.... I stand corrected :). I have tried disconnecting my battery for as long as 24 hours, and never had any luck clearing codes - but it appears I had to do the other things too. I'll try that next time. Thanks john.

You can also clear the codes by pulling the ECM fuse under the hood, that way there you don't lose memory settings like on Passlock bypass modules for remote starters ;)

Autozone cannot read codes that deal with this type of trouble codes. I am having the same issues (Trac, ABS & Engine lights) and they can't read them. I went to a mechanic and he said all the codes point to the RF wheel.

You know, funny you should mention the front right wheel. I have the same problem, haven't checked it out yet, but as soon as it screws up if I am braking at the time, the abs pump kicks in and the car pulls to the left (telling me the left wheel has braking power and the right one doesn't so the abs system thinks the right wheel has locked up which makes it release brake pressure on that right wheel). I'm begining to wonder if maybe the routing of the wires for the right wheel hub speed sensor is messed up causing it to short out or break by rubbing against something, or it may actually be too short and being pulled on depending how the wheels are steered.
