im looking into a cold air intake system for my 01' grand am. I wanted to know how much they run. I'm not looking for a high performance one, just a decent one that will get me 10-20hp. Are they easy to install? can I do it myself or should i have a dealer install it?

They usually run for $125-200 depending on quality. They are super easy to install. You should have no problem. Good luck

John's right on. They're deffinately a do-it-yourselfer. By the way, you're not going to get "10 to 20 hp" out of it, unless you've got significant other mods. You don't have to pay 125 to 200 $ for one either, depending on where you get it. I got mine for 90$ off ebay and it worked fine. I'll post a thread from a long time ago where me and some other guys discussed the hell out of intakes - it's a great thread and you'll learn lots reading it.

Alright... Finnally dug up the 'ole bugger :). Here it is - just read the whole thing and you should pick up some info on intakes:

Yeah, Ridenour's right, you won't get 10-20 hp more on a cold air intake. At best you'll get about 1/2% more HP (8HP). Now, if you do the exhaust along with a cold air system than your odds are much better because an engine can only take in as much air as it can spit out unless you can force it down it's throat. Again you are still limited by how much you are exhausting. I have a pretty good Ram air system and I think I'm at about 160HP from the stock 150HP. A 6cyl GA can't shake me and vice versa.

Intake power is actually exactly who I bought my original intake from. The buy-it-now price is only 53$ - totally worth it if you ask me. I would deffinately get it.

As far as that "turbonator", it's pure snake-oil. That, and other intake spinners / twisters have been on the market forever, and most of them have actually been dyno-proven to lose horsepower. It's pure bullshit. Sorry, I know it's just too good to be true - which is exactly what it is.
