99 Jumpy steering

I am new to this forum, hope I don't sound stupid. I have a 99 Tahoe 5.7/350. When I come around curves,everything is fine at first, then the steering seems to jump or jerk itself into what ever direction I am going. Its like there is more power assist than I need. I did some research and it seems to sound like a bad 'EVO sensor'. I called the dealer and they did not show an 'EVO' for the 99 tahoe, they did have a "steering wheel positioning sensor" ($72.30) where this goes, I have no clue.
The manual says I should have a 'Vehicle speed sensor' and it should be on the transmission housing. I checked for this and came up empty, no such device on the transmission, as far as I could see or feel. Can anyone help.

The steering wheel sensor is the most likely fix for your problem. Lots of posts in the "C/K, Suburban, Silverado & Tahoe forums.
It's located at the bottom of the steering column just before it goes through the firewall. Don't try to DIY without researching it first.

I have heard it called EVO and VSS. But it does sit on the steering shaft. Where the two shafts bolt up, there is a ring around the upper shaft with some wires coming off it. That is your sensor. Replacing it consists of unbolting the shafts and pulling the sensor off. It's highly recommended to disconnect the battery to prevent air bag deployment, though some didn't and had no problems. I would suggest buying the sensor from GMPartsDirect, even with tax and shipping it's cheaper than the dealer.

Thank You, for the info. I searched under the dash and located it. Changed it out in about 20min. It was easier than I thought. It cured the problem perfectly. ( I have had this problem for the last 4 years) Thanks.

What's the correct name for the EVO? What's the part number? Does anyone other than the dealer carry it? What's the correct term for it on GMPartsDirect?

EVO=Electronic Variable Orfice. Has to do with the orfice that controls steering effort on the power steering pump. This is controlled by the EVO/PASSLOCK module and gets input from the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) and the HWSS(Steering HandWheel Speed Sensor). In most of the posts here you'll find the HWSS referred to as the EVO sensor. Search around in the GMPartsDirect "catalog" for steering wheel speed sensor or variations. Or just e-mail them with your VIN and what your looking for. Usually take a couple of days for a response...............Steve
