Painting mirror caps??

Can you paint the chrome mirror caps on the sideview mirrors and have them look good? I have heard conflicting answers and am wondering whats up. I would much rather just paint mine, if possible, then have to buy new ones. (I guess this also applies to the grille shell - can you paint the chrome one or do I have to find an all plastic one?)

ive asked this question as well but havent really gotten one solid answer. Ive heard it will work and ive also heard it will not work.... im not sure. I do however want to check a local salvage yard for some parts off of a new Z71 Tahoe (not sure what years)... But they have the same exact mirrors, grille shells, front and rear bumpers....except that they are already painted. But im guessing the chances of finding something like that in a salvage yard are pretty slim.

I had my grille chrome painted with a special primer first and so far it is holding real well. The painter said as long as I don't take a "Big, hard" rock It will hold well. He said he "scuffed" the chrome very little before the primer. I also found a coworker that had a suburban that had the black caps, nice trade. Good luck!
