fuel pump problems

Ok I checked all the posts so far, could be my pump, could be the relay, could be a multitude of things....which is it? any guesses?
Here's the problem...when driving the car, cold or not, raining or not, she starts to whine in the back end, got out of my car checked it, it's in the tank...tugged on a few things, wiggled this and that and it seemed to change the pitch of the whine...assuming it's the pump.
I have changed the fuel filter, did a whole tune-up on her, plugs, wires, air filter, oil change and all that..it still does it...
I know the sound is in the tank..and when the whine dies or stops, so does the car. It will either refuse to take gas or it just dies. I have to pull over and turn her off (if it hasnt died) and rev the s**t outta her to get her going again and back comes the whine.
I've had a fuel pump go before on another car and i kinda know the symptoms but this is getting ridiculous now. A new pump is $500CD and I really hope this isnt the problem (along with all the other stuff going on with her right now)....
Let me know what you guys think...otherwise shes going to the garage and i gotta fork out a ton of cash....

I got my sinfire 2001 gaz pump replaced at 75k. The car would not start. All was well the night before. Had to get th car towed. Cost of the pump ? $495 cnd + tx and work

Just replaced the fuel pump in my Blazer, so I'll tell you my experience with pump symptoms. Removing the tank is a simple but physical task that most service shops will charge about 3 hours labor to do. Add in the misc. charges plus the pump, my Blazer would have cost me about $750 to have done. I paid $320.00US for the pump and spent 6 hours doing the job.

As for your problem, with the car running when you hear the whining, If the whining stops then the engine stops shortly after, most likely your pump is bad. It's very rare for a relay to unlatch once it's been energized, so I'm guessing it's not the relay.
If the engine would stop running before the pump stops whining, your problem would be somewhere else (Pressure regulator, injectors,and such). I noticed on my Blazer that the original pump was very quiet, while the new Carter pump I installed is very noisy. So if you never heard your pump making loud noises before, It may be another indicator that the pump is bad.

On sunfires fuel pump problems are common and it sounds to me that you seem to have it, on my sunfire it went just after 20k when i first got it warranty payed for it but i belive the actual cost to replace it would have been somewhere around the 500 line, anywho the pump itself is cheap but the labor is whats gonna kill ya i suggest you do it ureself or if you know someone that can do it for you that would prolly be a much cheaper solution then to get a dealer or something to do it.
