comin home from work late last thursday, im cruisin along and start slowin down for a red light. no one on the road at all and i hear a loud psssssssssssst coming from behind me, im like it cant be me im stopped...and this nice maroon coloured gs-t with exhaust and what sounded like intake pulled up beside me

i just recently got my wrx and havent had any decent races so i was like what the hell i want to feel this AWD launch once and for all (no i havent'd launced my baby yet :evillol: )...i rev her up a bit to get a good feel for when i should slip the clutch, the other set of lights turns yellow and the gs-t gives a huge rev to intimidate me...not working! i rev it up to 4600 rpm and the light goes green....i slip the clutch nice and stomp on the throttle...jesus christ i fucking took off like a rocket!!! AWD power baby!!!! got about 1 and a half cars off the bat and by the end of third i maybe had 2-2.5 cars on him!
he pulled up beside me after tipped his hat and pulled a y-turn..guessing he came after me just for the race as well!

it was a good race considering all i have is intake lol

doubtful, a GSX shoulda been able to keep up better right off the line than that, with a decent driver behind the wheel.

i doubt it cuz i saw the gs-t sticker on his back bumper after he pulled in front of me to do his u-turn

he got a good launch too cuz i didnt hear any tire squeaking

You'll always remember your first AWD launch...not your second, not your last, but always your first. :) They only get better as you find the ideal technique. Good luck with the wrx, nice run.

be careful with the launches though

everyone know what happens if ya do it too often

oh ya i will only launch it at the track and RARELY on the road unless i know im gonna have a good race, otherwise i wouldnt wanna waste a clutch on a civic

I don't even launch mine at the track (road courses). Drag racing from a stop in a WRX costs lots of $$ (clutch, transmission, differentials, etc). I've launched mine about five times total since I bought it. It will, though, snap your friggin' neck off.

Nice kill. Once the clutch dies, just upgrade to a Stage 3, and that should be good for a while.

aren't the transmissions like glass though?

im hopin the clutch doesnt die out on me, i've treated her pretty good so far and its my first time driving manual so i learned pretty fast on a quick car so that always good

anyways after i launced it i obviously could smell the clutch, but how long is that smell supposed to last for? it's kinda bugging me,
thanks

The smell might last a while. After racing a few times (not always even launching), my buddies clutch will stink it up for almost an hour. His is close to being done now though.

AWD launch definitely rules. My 02 WRX's (MY03 for USDM) clutch burning smell stank up the garage after a 5 min drive home right after a 4000rpm launch. So yeah, quite a while i think.

And how long should i be slipping the cluth for? I usually slip it for a good 3-5 seconds after I'm moving since I'm too scared to feel that hard bump from letting the clutch pedal out too quickly because I know that every bump is one more nail in the transmission's coffin.

I'm not understanding something here. If you slip the clutch, you might ruin your clutch, that's why you need a racing clutch. But if you do slip the clutch, than the transmission doesn't get worn, right? It's only bad for the transmission if you dump the clutch, right?

Pretty much. With the WRX i always like to think of the clutch as a fuse in an electric circuit. If the clutch is too strong i.e. like a racing clutch, then you'll ruin the gearbox if it's totally stock. It's much cheaper to have a weaker clutch on stock gears because the clutch will be cheaper to replace over the gearbox and the rest of the tranny.

I've heard of guys using racing clutches on stock gearboxes and the clutch is fine but they're going through their 3rd gearbox:grinno:

From what I've heard about racing clutches though is that they're pretty much on/off with a really strong bite, so it's actually quite difficult to slip them (i don't know how true this statement is).

Then again, this is mostly a problem for AWD vehicles since we don't have the luxury of wheelspinning to save our trannies.

ya thats why launcing an AWD shouldnt be done...maybe once or twice here and there, gotta baby the tranny

the WRX is an awesome car to drive
cant wait till i upgrade the turbo :)
