Engine shut down

Hi, new poster here. I was left my dad's 98 blazer. I was driving down the road and it started knocking VERY loudly. The truck lost power and then shut down. I had to have it towed as I was about 5 miles from home. The "Check Engine" light came on, it was leaking coolant, etc. I tried to start it, but it would not catch. After it was towed, I let it sit for a day and it started. But, after warming up, the knock was back. HELP!!
I have not driven it since and I think I'll have to have it towed to a garge. What do any of you think the problem is??? Someone told me that the engine is designed to shut down before any serious damage is done. Is this true?
PLEASE HELP
Bob

It will only shutdown with no oil pressure. You lost all your coolant so more than likely your engine overheated and is shot. You're looking at a rebuild.

It had oil pressure and I checked the oil. The temp guage goes from no temp, to way over to the right...

You can either replace with a used engine or get a rebuild.... After that kind of overheat damage and getting that kind of knock, it's pretty much toast.

Wow... can you give me an idea on the price of something like that?

Probably 500-800 for a new engine, 700-1000 for a rebuild... You could just get a new block and swap your intake, heads, sensors etc over. The bare block used would probably be about 400 bux

I should quantify when I said NEW I mean new used, a actual NEW 0 mile engine would be about 2500 bux.

Hi, thanks...
There was enough oil in it... the coolant was the problem... man! This sucks!

damage done will depend how hot and how long it was run ... i'd 1st check all hoses, refill coolant, not to top for higher pressure buildup recovery system function, 2 inches below rad cap ... see where leaking ... fix leak if cheap ... rubber hoses usually let go before block damage ... replace thermostat if leaks fixed but still getting too hot ... pros rightly recommend against bar's leaks coolant stop leak but it sometimes works to seal minor leaks ... high leaks preventing any pressure buildup could allow boiling and casue higher temps ...
check for oil in coolant or coolant in oil after running a bit to see if one getting into the other from possible block gasket leak or block crack.
