coffee spill--HELP!

I have had the worst day!
I was getting out of my 2004 Corolla LE this morning and tipped my coffee over while taking it out of the cup holder. I do not think a huge amount of coffee spilled, but what did spill ended up right in my gear shifter. I tried to soak up as much as possible (I turned the car back on and moved the shifter from park to 1st gear in an effort to wipe up as much coffee as possible).
I just junked my 1997 Nissan Maxima (which had suffered this same abuse multiple times). My father was sure that my spills caused some major problems in that car.
Does anyone think this will cause any problems in my Corolla? What should I do now to prevent any problems from occuring. BTW, the coffee had cream and a bit of sugar in it.
HELP!
Thanks!

not many things you can do to prevent, but if you have a large cupholder, try using a thermos with an easy lid to sip through that can close with the push of a thumb and open again

Thanks for the reply, but I meant to ask if there is anything I can do to prevent the coffee already in the shifter from causing damage to the car. I don't know if there is some sort of heavy-duty clean-up solution available to correct and prevent problems caused by liquids being spilled into the area of the shifter.
