1989 Corolla shift cable

I have a 1989 Toyota Corolla LE that I cannot shift. At the transmission, the shift cable mount has come loose and will not stay in place when I reinsert it into the bracket. When shifting, the cable sleeve gets pushed out of the bracket and then the cable flexes and does not shift the transmission. Do I need an new cable or is there a way to reattach the sleeve to the bracket so it will hold?
