Look at it....see if it looks bad...
Look for burning of the tip of the rotor.....also take the rotor off and see if it is arcing to the steel distributor shaft....inside the cap how much spark damage is there to the six tits for the wires....if nothing else knock off the oxidation with a screwdriver....

If you do change these parts use dielectric silicone ..under the rotor and where the wires go into the cap. Also where the wire goes on the spark plug. Even if you don't change these parts you should apply dielectric silcone. TIP: use Champion spark plugs...or Champ...truck plugs.

Owned 3 Cherokees...GET a book and talk to the parts guy.

Aloha, Why dielectric silicone under the rotor ? doesn't that introduce the potential to arc from the metal portion of the rotor to the steel distributor shaft underneath ?

Actually the gel will prevent the arcing....(It's an insulator not a conductor) especially true on the GM car with the coil in the distributor cap and the rubber piece in there. That is the kind that I use.....AC Delco. As a plus the silcone will keep the rotor from being stuck on the shaft.

You might want to rethink the Bosch Plat..plugs. They are great plugs in German cars like Porsche or Benz or Audi but terrible in Jeep 4.0L engines. Use the Champion....had 3 Jeeps...brother worked at Jeep dealer...he says use the Champ. I used the Plat...but was waste of money ...had to put Champs in it to clear the check engine lite for misfire.

They make a tool for rechasing the spark plug hole. USE anti-seize compound to prevent this from happening ever again. If you can't rechase....you can heli-coil...or use an insert...better but harder.
Talk to the machinist. Hope you enjoy working on cars...there is a lot to learn. What you are doing....is how I became an auto mechanic 30 years ago....retired now.
