Clutch slipping 4th

I've bought a 96 gst 5sp about a month ago and but, I had to learn how to drive a 5spd, and I am getting the hang of it pretty well. Well one day on the freeway I was driving and I tried to shift into 4th and the car jerked back, screeched, and reved really high but going slow. So I put it back into 3rd and it was fine. So I took it to a mechanic and they told me it was something wrong with my slave cylinder. So they fixed it and I got it back yesterday and tried to go into 4th and the same thing happened. So now I'm stuck as to what is going on. Am I not shifting properly or what? It shifts into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fine. It's when I try to goto 4th is where I have my problem. I haven't tried 5th yet so I don't know about that yet. In 3rd I've never reved past 5k to shift into 4th and I'm usually at 60mph. I'm a newb so any help wolud be appreciated. It sucks staying in 3rd. My name is Mike.

That's a wierd problem, it kind of sounds like you maybe shifted into reverse instead of 4th? Remember, when shifting from 3rd to 4th, all you have to do is push down, don't goto the side or nothing. Same applies to shifting from 2nd to 3rd, you just push up, many rookies try to push up and to the side and put it into 5th instead.

^ What he said.

It sounds like you may be accidentally shifting back into 2nd or into Reverse.

Thanks guys I'll check it out and see because like I said, I'm learning how to drive a 5spd and maybe I am mis-shifting, so that's why i wanted to ask one of you experts. So I'll try it and see what happens. Also, could anyone tell me the normal shift points. Thanks.

For a stock turbo car (t25) I found it pointless to go above 6k rpm in all but first gear. Take 1st to ~7300. Fuel cut is at 7500. You can shift anywhere up to that point if you like. And I'll toss in a vote for going back to second. Reverse would have cause a whole other set of problems ;) To see if the clutch is indeed slipping, get into 5th, driving about 3k rpm, and floor it. If RPM shoots up but speed doesnt change much, its the clutch. IF its actually slowing the car down, screeching, and reving high when you go into 4th, still sounds like you might be in a lower gear. A slipping clutch wont slow you down, it just wont allow you to accelerate fully (if at all).

Live and learn. IMO, the best way to learn how to drive manual (as well as getting to know your car) is drive it slow. Keeping your car at maximum torque rage when accelerating will definetly make you go faster then redlining every gear. You should find it easier to learn if you know how a clutch work's. 97GSTspyder made an excellent thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=365652&highlight=clutch) explaining everything you need to know.
