try this: get underneith the car and look for any major rust spots or even spots that have rusted out to the point where theres holes in the floor boards. if so, thats the cause of the water. another thing -- is the water just in spots or is it like one big puddle? if its just in spots then it could be that water is leaking up around the rivets or bolts in the floorboard under the carpet. just some thoughts...

Had the same problem with the passenger's side. Water was leaking in from the blower's fresh air flap. Take off the cowl under the wipers and you will see a rectangular door in front of the blower assembly. A new door is under $10 at the dealer (called "valve") or put a piece of duct tape over the rubber hinge.
I'm not sure about the trunk. Try a new trunk gasket.

I'm not sure about the trunk. Try a new trunk gasket.thanks, i figured it would be something like that. it really messes up a perfect carpet. did you have any trouble removing the wiper arms and the black plastic cowl cover?? did you use the duct tape idea and is it holding??? thanks again.

When I had my windshield replaced, the guy removed the wipers in about one minute. First time I tried, it took about 30 min. You pop off the plastic covers at the base of the wipers (easy), unbolt them (easy), and pull off the wipers (not as easy). The service manual tells you to use a battery terminal puller for this. I got mine from Sears and I could just barely get it on with the wipers positioned at the right angle. Its just too big. If you don't have a puller, you can probably just use some flathead screwdrivers. Insert one in the hinge and apply pressure to unload the spring tension on the arm, and pry the arm off with another at the same time. I've never tried this, but the windshield guy did something like it. The wipers also have a small hole near the hinge where you can insert an allen wrench to unload the spring tension.
If you can't get them off, maybe you can just ask a windshield replacement shop.
The cowl is just held in by screws (easy). I used duct tape because I didn't want to drive around wiperless or have a soggy carpet while I waited for the dealer to order the part. I don't recommend using tape for such an inexpensive part, but mine has held up all winter.
good luck,
-Jason

good luck,
-Jason thanks jason . i called one gm dealer parts dept to order that "valve" door. they said it wasn,t on my car. when i pull the cowl cover and get a good look i,ll then go into some gm parts place till i get the thing. i,ve had about 20 old cars in the last 10 years and had lots of water leaks. this one looks fixable thanks to your advice. james.
