2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

It uses Jaguar 4.2 V-8, but the cylinder block, cylinder heads, crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, camshafts, inlet and exhaust manifolds, lubrication system and engine management are all unique to the 4.3 V-8 used in the new Aston. It also has dry-sump lubrication.

I sure hope yellow isn't offered for the new Aston Martin.

"The V8 Vantage has endured the most extensive test and development programme in the Company’s 91 year history during which 78 Prototypes were vigorously tested more than 1½ million miles. In Dubai over 12,000 miles of testing was carried out where ambient temperatures regularly hit 48ºc and the bodywork of the cars reached 87ºc.

High speed testing was conducted at the Nardo test track in Italy and extensive testing was carried out at Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in Germany, and cold weather testing in temperatures as low as -30ºc was undertaken in Sweden."

Henrik Fisker was Aston Martin's Director of Design from 2001 to 2004. Three must-read articles about Aston Martin and Henrik Fisker.

Aston Martin will avoid electronic gadgets that insulate owners from the driving experience, says Henrik Fisker, chief designer for Aston Martin.

Electronics such as BMW's iDrive and an over-reliance on traction control systems have taken the joy out of driving, he told the Motor Press Guild here last month.

Fisker also blasted some automakers for using so much protective plastic and coatings on interior wood and leather "that you can't tell if it is real or fake."

Fisker said he is amazed people will pay top-dollar for high-end stainless steel fixtures in their kitchens but settle for cheap plastic knobs in their luxury cars.

"We don't want just injection-molded plastic with graphics and a chrome ring around it," Fisker said. "Anyone can do that for two dollars. Even Hyundai does it."

Instead, Aston Martin will use personal craftsmanship to assemble crucial interior elements, such as the seats. While that may mean more irregular stitching compared with a robot-assembled piece, Fisker compared it to a high-end handbag, for which people pay more for a handcrafted item.

As for the leather, Fisker wants to use more supple textures with less plastic protection. That means the seats will wear to the occupants' contours, like a good pair of shoes. But that also means, "If you spill ice cream on the seat, you can't wait two days to clean it off, because it will stain," Fisker said.

Similarly, Fisker said, "Our wood will age with the car, because real wood ages."

In examining the invasion of electronic gadgetry into luxury cars, Fisker said: "What do people expect from a car? We don't want to drive and send an e-mail at the same time. We need to focus on what enhances the driving experience. It should feel like an occasion. The car should drive perfectly without electronics."

Fisker added that Aston Martin would have electronic features where appropriate, such as backup warning sensors.

When asked why Aston Martins loaded with gadgetry are driven in James Bond movies, Fisker curtly replied, "We don't build cars for James Bond. He picks them and decides to put gadgets in them."

Jaguar's V-8 first came out with 4.0 liters in the 1997 XK8. It was heavily revised a couple years ago (now with 4.2 liters).

Yellow is a bad color for a classy car like an Aston Martin.

Aston Martin ran the 4.3 liter V-8 three times longer on the dyno than the DB9’s V-12. The V-8's dry-sump lubrication system lowers the engine such that the crank balancers rotate four inches above the ground.

Its frame is a mix of extruded aluminum box sections, stamped floorpans and precision castings at key points like suspension attachments. The windshield header is a single aluminum casting, the door frames are magnesium. Everything is hot- or cold-bonded, aerospace style, with minimal application of self-piercing rivets and no conventional structural welds. Glue, the company says, allows cleaner production processes and better vibration-dampening properties than conventional welding.

The V8 Vantage is suspended with aluminum double wishbones and coil-over shocks front and rear. Even the shock casings are aluminum.

Exclusive images in this week's Auto Express magazine reveal one of the most driver-focused Aston Martins ever. And we can can reveal secret plans for an RS version of the V8 Vantage. With a stripped-out interior, uprated engine and stiffer suspension, the lightweight model has its sights firmly set on the Porsche 911 GT3 and Ferrari's F430 Stradale.

It won't be Aston's only performance newcomer. Thanks to a growing market for hardcore supercars, a stripped-out DB9 is also on the way, drawing on the firm's rich racing heritage.

As our images show, the lightweight V8 Vantage's styling is influenced by Aston's DBR9 Le Mans racer, with a low splitter and gaping air intakes supplementing the trademark grille. But without the vast track-car wing and only a subtle bodykit, the purity of the V8 Vantage's shape has been kept. Major aerodynamic enhancements have been hidden underneath, with an undertray and venturi tunnels that channel airflow around the car. These emerge at the rear, where they are joined by larger twin exhaust pipes.

Weight-reducing measures will include composite body panels, a carbon fibre roof and 19-inch magnesium alloy wheels. Together with a stripped-out interior, including racing buckets replacing the standard chairs, the newcomer will weigh at least 150kg less than the current V8 Vantage, tipping the scales at 1,420kg. This is only marginally heavier than Porsche's outgoing 911 GT3. To improve the power to weight ratio further, Aston is likely to raise the output of its 4.3-litre V8 from 380bhp to 420bhp, thanks to an uprated variable valve timing system, a higher 8,000rpm rev limit and a performance exhaust.

With a six-speed manual gearbox, expect 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, 0-100mph in less than 10 seconds and a top speed of 190mph - figures which should match the forthcoming 911 GT3. The new exhaust will give the V8 Vantage an even louder engine note, too.

Cornering will match the straight-line performance, with a lowered ride height, adjustable dampers and sharper steering offering better agility and more responsive handling. Bigger brakes will provide even stronger stopping power, too.

Customers who spend much of their time at track days and who want an even sharper machine can specify an optional roll cage. As for creature comforts, the lightweight Vantage is likely to come with a stereo and air-con as standard, as well as electric windows. But these 'luxuries' can be deleted at the customer's request.

The lightweight V8 Vantage won't appear until 2007 at the earliest, and will have a price tag of around £90,000. In the meantime, a convertible V8 Volante is likely to debut in 2006, with sales starting later in the year.

Perhaps they want to launch it with a manual from the start.

This color suits the V8 Vantage far better than yellow.

Do you live in Dubai? I think that is where the new V8 Vantage was tested.

Yes, I live in Dubai. Somewhere I have some grainy camera phone pics of several V8 Vantages driving down a highway in Dubai back in May 2004. At the time I didn't know what kind of car they were. Aston actually brought some journalists to Dubai to ride around in those prototypes and the story and pictures are available here:

http://www.automobilemag.com/photo_gallery/0503_2007_aston_martin_v8_vantage/

Ford tests all their PAG vehicles in Dubai during the summer, as does Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. This past summer I saw Mercedes GL and R-Class prototypes almost on a weekly basis as well as a few Porsche Caymans. The new S-Class, CL-Class, MLK (mini ML), Land Rover L3, Range Rover Sport, etc., were all frequently seen by people during the summer months.

bad news. spoke w/ a salesman today. I was gonna put a reserve on an April car. He told me not to bother, that I wouldn't fit. I'm 6'3". He said I am beyond the limit. He said some people my size or bigger will force themselves into it, but he would not recommend it. How's that for ya, a salesman that told me to go buy something else on a $120,000 car. :)
he gets brownie points in my book.

<<I wouldn't fit. I'm 6'3". >>

I find tht hard to believe. Have you sat in one? I'm not a little guy at 5 11 and 220, but I found there was plenty of room; the seat wasn't even all the way back. Way more room than the Gen II Viper.

Look for a test drive opportunity at a dealer in your area, drivers are coming to California in March.

I think you should try it...I'm 5' 11" and there is plenty of head and leg room left. The seat itself could easily go back another 4" so I think you'll be quite comfortable.

I finally got to sin in a Vantage today. I fit, just barely but I fit. Great looking car.

The 2007 models of the Vantage and DB9 have redesigned seats based on the Rapide concept car which accommodate...well...larger people. They are also lighter and feature improved head/thorax airbags and power folding for access to the rear.

I personally prefer the look of the current seat as do several other owners on other forums, but then I guess AML had some reason for making the change. More details on changes for the 2007 model year are available here:
