best engine for a 88 celica st

My wifes engine in her 88 celica is goin. has about 300k miles on it. just wanted to know whats the best engine to get for it that is a direct bolt in. also wanted to know if i need a ecu, wiring, etc. and for last, wanted to know if its easy to go from a auto to a 5 speed.
