Hey everyone, I have a 96 Ford explorer. Had a bad transmission when I got it so I had it rebuilt. Ran fine but last year it started shifting funny. When I slow down to stop it shifts hard and doesn't shift into 1st gear, so when I start to go it's in second and of course can't accelerate then shifts hard at about 20mph. I've change the tans oil, checked fluid level. Replaced the shift solenoid, shift sensor and the powertrain control module. I'm tired of wasting money and getting no results, if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks! Oh yeah it'a an automatic.

I'm having a similar problem with my '98 (88k miles). When slowing down, the tranny will not shift down from 3rd or 4th gear. Cansequently, when I stop the engin dies. If I mannually shift down to second, then no problems. My neighbor, a mechanic, seems to think the problem is the endine control computer--but I can be sure unless I spend a few hundred $ on a replacement.
I have you cured your problem yet?

Well I haven't found anything to work yet. I'm taking it into the trans repair shop to get it's check up, they have no idea what's wrong. Probably gonna take it to Ford to see if they can figure it out, not looking forward to it but it seems like the only option. Let me know if anyone out there has cure for the problem.

I see my link only went to "search" results and not the thread. Basically, another guy has the same problem and "Opera House" replies with "Torque Convert Clutch The torque converter normally has slip. To increase efficiency, there is an internal clutch that locks up third and higher gears. Sometimes the solenoid that controls this sticks and it doesn't unlock when coming to a stop." Anyway, good luck. Let me know what Ford says.
