Another Crank Walk Victim

Well i took my car to shepherd racing the other day to have my ACT 2600 installed. And John Shepherd calls me today and tells me that i have stupid ass crankwalk. The crank is off balance by 75 thousantdhs of an inch. He said that anything over 7 thousand is considered crankwalk. So im gonna have to get a new short block and im just gonna get a valve job done at the same time so I can just get everything over with. Im just really pissed though because its just been one problem after another with this car and i have only had it since november. Damn this sucks!!

man, welcome to the world of DSM's. That really sucks that it happened to you. CW is more common in 2g's than 1g's though. I hope it all works out for you in the future though.

good luck!

Look on the bright side--you don't have to worry about the pesky 7 bolt walking every time you give the car a little throttle :)

do a 6-bolt swap and the chances of that happeneing ever again are very very rare, unless you have some weird unluckyness or something. plus you'll be able to push more ponies through the 6-bolt than the 7-bolt.

Damn that sucks, i always cross my fingers in my head evrytime i drive my car everymorning. Not just because of CW, just because i want the car to run good.

Its for your own good.

And I'm glad to hear that its been diagnosed properly for once, so we can be sure it really is crankwalk and not just lifter tick, AKA "Internet Crank Walk." :D

Ya, John Shepherd said that my best bet would be to go with a new 99 spec short block. He said i wouldnt have to worry about it walking and i will get a warranty on too.

New from where? Mitsu rebuilt shortblocks are over 2 grand last time I got a quote. 2700 I want to say, with the labor being 1300, for a grand total of 4k. I wouldnt hesitate to run a decent used motor though, sometimes poeple change to 6 bolts just out of fear of crankwalk, and odds are it will never happen. You can pick these motors up cheap. And if its from a later model year, mileage can be pretty low.

Is john going to be doing the install too? What did he give you for a price on the 99 motor?

Well he gave me a quote of 2 grand for the short block which is new from mitsu. And then he said around a thousand for the instal. i had mentioned to him about possibly getting a 6 bolt and he felt that it would be better to go with a new short block because he said that since u need to do some modifications to get it to go into a 2g that the price would be very similar. Plus i woulndt have any idea what sort of shape the 6 bolt was in.

But do you guys think it would be better to go with a 6 bolt? Thats what i was originaly thinking but i think John has a pretty good point.

from where i am at there is a shop that sells long blocks for$2500 with a 3 year warrenty and they put hardened cranks in them, they will also build the motor anyway you want for a little bit more money. This company knows there shit to, when i go back to work tomarrow i will get there phone# for you, and you can ask them anything you want.

Not to hijack the thread, but is there a certain number of miles that a 2G turbo needs to have gone, and nothing to have happened, for the car be considered CW free? As in, I've got 120K miles, no problems yet... am I "safe", or can the crank start to walk all of a sudden after all these problem-free years?

The higher the mileage the less likely it is to just do it randomly. But they are still sensitive to things that could cause CW on any motor. Running out of oil is a common cause, and there are various causes for running out of oil, like crushed oil pan, oil cooler gasket failure, loose oil filter stud, etc.

So 95 gsxracer what do u think? New 7 bolt short block or just go with a 6 bolt?

I'm no expert but I would venture to say some sort of rebuilt 6 bolt or low mileage 6 bolt would not only be cheaper but more reliable and hold more horsepower potential for you.

6 bolt is always the "better" choice, but it brings with it a whole other can of worms, mainly the random misfire DTC/limpmode, or more accurately, the risk (baro wire mod) or cost (DSMlink) associated with the fix. Peopel tend to think of it as a no brainer drop in replacement, but its not quite that simple :) If you are going to use the extra capacity the trouble is well worth it. For for a 400whp or less car that will never see more, its a waste of time, money, and effort IMHO. And 7 bolts take even more power than that and still run reliably, but I guess you have to pick a cutoff point somewhere.

ok I am getting really irritated. I have a feeling that, with my luck, I am going to get crankwalk very soon, that is if my engine doesn't blow up from driving it too hard. Where does one go to check for crankwalk? My friend said it's 100's of dollars just to check for it...I don't know where to go.. I have taken it to two garages and none of them want to talk about it...they jsut avoid it...I don't know what to do or where to go...my GSX blows

Get a prybar, and a helper. Using the prybar, push the crank pulley toward the passenger side of the car. Then have your helper push the clutch in. If you can see the crank pulley move back toward the drivers side, it is too much.

If you actually have thrust bearing failure, you should most likely have some sort of clutch problem. The bearing in my sig is from my 96. That is what "crankwalk" looks like on the inside.lol

I can see a crank move 3 thousandths ;) You can always see it move, even when its very tight. It needs to be measured. On that thread on www.racingknowledge.org that I always reference, I explain two methods for actually measuring it.

I ass-u-me-d that he would know what I was talking about when I said "if it moves". :icon16:

man need to let this crankwalk crap, die, read old threads. Im sure 95gsxracer is sick of this crap to. Know need to worry about it, you will know soon enough if you have crankwalk problems. Like RACER said alot of the shit is online crankwalk, at least tsi444 had it checked, not another one saying i hope i do not have it!!!!!!!!!!!
