2000 sonoma quit while driving it, and won't start

Truck completely shut down while driving it and will not start again. No warning lights came on, it did not sputter, it just quit. Ignition module was tested and it's ok, replaced pick up coil in distributor, new rotor, still won't start but it does back fire occasionally. Spark out of coil is ok, good spark at cap. No spark coming out of cap. Can any one help us or does any one have any suggestion as to what else we can check. Can hear the fuel pump working. No spark at plugs even though they are fairly new. Help please

I have a 2001 sonoma SLS 2wd that has done the same thing to me. The truck just quit while driving it. No hesitation or stumbling it just died. No lights came on except when I had a friend hook it to a code error computer it bounced an altenator code. About 2 days after it bounced that code my altenator went out. I figured the day that it died one of the diodes in the altenator blew causing the truck to quit. But that my 2 cents worth.

If it has the 4.3, there is a plastic gear in the timing chain area that snaps. It happened to my Dad, when he was driving down the thruway. He was told by one tech that his engine needed to be replaced, then found one that new the problem. He paid just over 500.

WTF?! I've had several 4.3 motors from 92 to current apart, and I've never ever seen ANY plastic gears in the timing chain area. 4 pieces in there under the cover. 2 gears (crank and cam gears) the chain, and the reluctor ring (for the crank sensor)...Something doesn't sound right on that.

exact same problem happened to me.

I will check the altenator like the above post mentioned.

Where is the timing chain / belt on this 4.3L ? Is it hard to get at to change?
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Please check the dates before posting this is 4 years old!! Info on timing chain can be found at autozone.com, repair guides.
