2000 Trooper and spark knock

As many may already know, I have the infamous burning oil problem...which I'm going to try and correct with an engine soak as read on the forum. But I'm also noticing that I can't really run 87 gas in the truck. it spark knocks so much it's scary. I can usually run 89, or a mix between 93 and 87.
Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this? I have to believe that 87 should be adequate.
Thx,
Ed

It's due to carbon build up. I had it on my 2000 3.2 Amigo too starting at about 15k. After a couple rounds of Chevron techron it went away. It use to come back a couple of times years, but since I started using sea foam before every oil change I have no pinging and I can run 87 octane.
pinging is due to carbon build up in the combustion camber.

True, water mist will "steam clean" your top end nicely, but I would not recommend this procedure for late model isuzu 3.2/3.5's The common chamber is designed such that you will wind-up with most of the water laying in the bottom of the common chamber. Also if you try to work the throttle by hand (from the throttle body) with the engine running, you can royally screw up the throttle by wire system (2000+ isuzu's if I remember correctly) Real costly error(s).

Is it ok to move the throttle when not running? I hope so, as I have done this many many times to clean that EGR tube. PLEASE TELL ME IT'S OK!!!!!!!!!!

I've always don't mine while it is not running.
I just push open the butterfly with a pcv pipe (or the likes) and just jam it open to spray out and scrub out the the EGR port.
No worries.

Yes, it's ok to work the throttle by hand when the engine is off, key off. Rest at ease!
