is the front U joint primarily associated with 4 wheel driving? i noticed my front U joints were a little loose today but doesnt look like an immediate task. however, i was under the impression this was only associated with 4 wheel driving, which i rarely use. is this a cause for concern? thanks

There will be a little bit of play in them.

It is only used for 4wd.

hey, someone else in another forum posted this:

"If your u-joints have any play in them, they're shot. Replace them."

i thought, like you said, a little play was normal.

You sure it is U-joint play, or the drive shaft itself has play?

The front driveshaft turns all the time, whether 4wd is engaged or not.

Just the U-joint. Driveshaft feels pretty solid.

like you can prolly barely jimmy it an inch left and an inch right.. if that.

He's talking about the front driveshaft, it runs from the transfer case to the front differantial and has U-joints.

You are talking about the front driveaxles, they run from the front differential to the hubs and have CV joints.

If the U-joints have any slop at all they need to be replaced.

so this goes against the notion that having a little play is alright. and why would they need to be if they're only used in 4X4? not questioning judgement, just curious for knowledge purposes.

Over all a little play is okay....this is because of the gears, but the u-joints should have zero slop.

They only have a load in 4wd, but they spin (and wear) all the time. If they fail you will be stranded, whether you are in 4wd or not.
