Steering shock question

Is the steering shock one of those things that should be routinely changed? Or is it one of those things that either works or it doesn't?

I understand when it gets to the point that the vibrations/etc., are coming through the steering its time to change it. But by then, its basically not working.

What about when its inbetween working/not working the way shocks can do? In other words, routinely replacing it when its in that inbetween state?

If you notice a little more shi,,y, or not a smooth as once was, also if you notice yit leaking oil, I would also advise going to an aftermarket one (rancho) when upgrading wheels and tires :2cents:

Easy to install. 100% improvement, even if you have stock tires. And not to expensive.

That's what it looks like reading around. Easy, other than getting the pin compressed in side of the shock out, to do, doesn't cost that must even for "high" end ones, improves handling and the feel one gets through the steering wheel of the "ride".

Found the Old Man EMU shock, OMESD40, can't find any listing for Rancho and the 2001 XJ's.

Can't see why you'd replace it without some symptoms. It's a snap to do, so (IMO) you don't really gain anything by being proactive with it.

Bear in mind that shimmy/vibrations/etc. are caused by more than just the damper going bad.

I replaced mine because I had redone the front end (shocks, springs bushings etc...) and I noticed a lot of bump-steer afterwords. I was under the same assumption, "if it aint broke, don't fix it" . I replaced it, and started to wonder if the front-end needed to be done at all...

What brand did you replace yours with?

The shock is a Rancho rs5000. I ordered it from www.quadratrec.com. Same place I got my suspension components.
