How can you tell what kind of transmission you have?
i.e., the number of gears, gear ratios, with/without overdrive.
Can it be decoded from the VIN?
Mine is a 2000 1500 Silverado, LT Z71 Offroad Sportside w/5.3 engine. Would be nice to know what is translating all that power to the wheels.

Here are the specs on the 4L60E: http://media.gm.com/division/2005_prodinfo/powertrain/transmissions/05_auto_trans_specs.html#m30
To find out what you have, you need to look at the RPO codes printed in the glovebox. Most likely, you will find M30 for 4L60E.

That one has the 4l60e in it up to a 6.0L engine. If a GMC or Chevrolet fullsize truck has the 8.1L engine or the Duramax diesel,it has the 5 speed automatic Allison transmission

and the 6.0 uses the 4l80e right?
