Ok I can build a motor blindfolded but I know dick about transmitions besides how to change a clutch or torque converter. My question is what kind of tranny is in my 92 1500 z71 sierra, it is a 5 speed manual with 4x4. I am also looking for a good sturdy replacement. My motor has had some wor done to it and the original tranny didn't agree with it.

You have a Getrag 5sp, designed in Germany bought by GM. I would recommend finding yourself a 4L80(TH400) and beef it up. You don't have to know much about automatics in order to rebuild one. Just use common sense and a clean work area. Talk to www.sonnax.com for recommendations on what you can do and what tranny will hold up fine to your application. That is an option I have considered but I would really like to stick with a manual tranny.
